Zealand:''This article is about the Danish island. For the Netherlands province, see Zeeland; for the Pacific island country named after the province, see New Zealand.'' Zealand (Danish: ''Sjælland'') is the largest island of Denmark. It is separated from Funen by the Great Belt and from Scania in Sweden by the Oresund. Zealand is connected to Funen by the Great Belt Bridge and to Sweden by the Oresund Bridge. The nation of New Zealand gets the spelling of its name from this island. When the Pacific Ocean island was discovered by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, it was named after the Dutch province of Zeeland. However, the English mistakenly thought it had been named after Zealand, and spelled it "New Zealand". The capital of Denmark, Copenhagen (Danish: ''København'') is partly located on the eastern shore of Zealand and partly on Amager. Other cities on the island are Roskilde and Elsinore (Danish: ''Helsingør''). == Cities == *Frederiksberg *Elsinore (Helsingør) *Holbæk *Copenhagen (København) *Kalundborg *Kongens Lyngby *Køge *Næstved *Roskilde *Slagelse *Slangerup *Sorø *Tisvilde *Vordingborg *Vallensbæk The name originates from the huge seal (mammal) populations on the shores of Zealand, making the original name Seal-land (''Sæl-land''). In ancient Danish ''seal'' (''sæl'') and "soul" (''sjæl'') are very closely related words, as seals were thought to be souls of lost seamen. I'd very much like to see a reference for this, because every other reference I have seen explicitly contradicts this - Zeeland was the name which inspired New Zealand, not Sjaelland. Zealand is/was the English translation of the Dutch province of Zeeland. --User:Kudz75 01:42, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC) : I think that there are nothing that will stop you from removing it (and the notice in the disambig line), and adding a note about that New Zealand was not named after the island, also adding a note in the edit summary to check the talk page. If there is anyone out there that comes up with any evidence, take a discussion about it. -- User:Johan Elisson | User_talk:Johan Elisson 13:32, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC) See other meanings of words starting from letter: ZZA | ZB | ZC | ZD | ZE | ZF | ZG | ZH | ZI | ZJ | ZK | ZL | ZM | ZN | ZO | ZP | ZR | ZS | ZT | ZU | ZW | ZX | ZY |Words begining with Zealand: Zealand Zealand Zealander Zealander Zealandic Zealandic_Flanders |
