William and MaryThe phrase William and Mary usually refers to the joint sovereignty over the Kingdoms of England and Scotland of William III of England and his wife Mary II of England. Their joint reign began in February, 1689, when they were called to the throne by Parliament, replacing James_II_of_England, who was "deemed to have fled" the country in the ''Glorious Revolution'' of 1688. After Mary died in 1694, William ruled alone until his death in 1702. Their rule was the only period in British history in which "joint sovereigns" with equal powers were allowed to reign; usually, the spouse of the monarch has no power and is simply a consort. The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia was chartered in 1693 and named in their honor. "William and Mary" is also the name for a United Kingdom television series staring Martin Clunes. It was shown on the channel ITV 1 in 2004. It has no relation to the King and Queen, merely a couple with the same names. == See also == *List of British monarchs *William III of England *Mary II of England English monarchs Scottish monarchs William and MaryThis article might be criticised according to the principle that Wikipedia is not a dictionary, but I believe that a minimum of link-rich information here represents a worthwhile improvement to ease of navigation and linking. A case might possibly be made for a reference to the concept of "William and Mary" as a historical or cultural period, in much the same way as "Queen Anne" or "Regency". --User:Deb William and mary#redirect William and Mary See other meanings of words starting from letter: WWA | WB | WC | WD | WE | WF | WG | WH | WI | WJ | WK | WL | WM | WN | WO | WP | WR | WS | WT | WU | WX | WY | WZ |Words begining with William_and_Mary: William_and_Mary William_and_Mary William_and_mary William_and_Mary_College William_and_Mary_of_England |
