Vienne is bounded by the ''départements'' of Indre-et-Loire on the north and northeast, Indre on the east, Haute-Vienne on the southeast, Charente on the south, Deux-Sèvres on the west, and Maine-et-Loire on the northwest.
The principal rivers are the Vienne and the Charente River.
