Verboten''Verboten'' is the German language equivalent of forbidden or prohibited. Used in an English language context, its connotations are those of an authoritarian state, be it the German Empire under Wilhelm II or Nazi Germany, as in both cases, inhabitants were seen as subjects having to obey orders rather than as free citizens. Today, the term is often used half-jokingly. In German, the word is of course still in active use (as in ''Rauchen verboten'', "No smoking", lit. "Smoking forbidden") but jokes are often made about the word being used as a euphemism for "cool". This seems to stem from the film ''Sonnenallee''. German loanwords Verboten=== Wrong Translation === The subtitle of the image contains a wrong translation of the sign's text: It means "No entry for non-employees" or something close to that, but definitely not "No Trespassing"!!! It is definitely not found in public places, neither is it common. I'm German, I do know what I'm talking about ^_^ but feel free to correct my English, it's not that good anyway :) ---- See Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Verboten. ---- "This page is a candidate to be moved to Wiktionary. If the page can be expanded into an encyclopedic article, rather than a dictionary definition, please do so and remove this message." That's what it says now at the top of the Verboten article. I have already tried to point out, but to no avail, that this used to be a longer article but that it was reduced by various contributors to its one-sentence "dicdef" status. All I can do now to "expand this page into an encyclopedic article" ("Please do so", it says above) is to revert it to its former size, which was not that bad. I'll do that now, but we're moving around in silly circles here. User:KF 12:01, Mar 7, 2005 (UTC) :And, thanks to User:Radiant!, we keep moving around in silly circles. User:KF 15:57, May 25, 2005 (UTC) :*Well, the VfD vote was to transwiki, and it does seem like a dicdef to me. I did not see a 'former size' that was encyclopedic (unless you mean [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Verboten&diff=10760591&oldid=10452450 this] where Rossami was correct in removing non-information from the article). We should end this silly circle by deleting it, per VFD consensus. User:Radiant!User_talk:Radiant!meta:mergist 08:41, May 26, 2005 (UTC) ::If your peace of mind depends on it, by all means put it up for deletion again. However, let me just point out again that the List of German expressions in English, which includes ''verboten'', actually encourages unsuspecting contributors to start the article all over again when they see a red link there (or even no link at all). And they are likely to come up with a similar sort of stub again. User:KF 10:05, May 26, 2005 (UTC) == What exactly is it that you don't like or accept about this article? == I don't know why people keep picking on this article. True, it is short, and someone somewhere might be willing and able to expand it, but as it is right now I don't think it's a stub. Rather, it is a short article. Even though it is short, it explains a cultural difference between English language and German language. In German, ''verboten'' is just an ordinary adjective (as the image seems to illustrate) while in English it does have more connotations. Why can't we just leave it at that?
