University of California

The University of California (UC) is a public university system within the State of California. It has a combined student body of more than 191,000 students and over 1,340,000 living alumni. The first campus was founded in 1868 in the city of Oakland, California, while the tenth and newest campus is schedule to open in the fall of 2005 near the city of Merced, California. Collectively and individually, the University of California's campuses boast large numbers of distinguished faculty in most every field. The University is considered a model for public institutions across the United States of America, although as of the 2002-03 fiscal year, only 38% of its total budget comes from the State. All campuses enroll both undergraduate and graduate students with the exception of the San Francisco, California campus, which enrolls only graduate students in the Medicine and health sciences.

==History== When the State of California ratified its first constitution in 1849, it stipulated for an educational system complete with a university. Taking advantage of the Morrill Land Grant Act, the California Legislature established an Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College in 1866. However, although this institution was provided with sufficient funds, it lacked land. Beforehand, Congregational minister Henry Durant had established the College of California in Oakland, California in 1855. With an eye for expansion, the college's trustees purchased 160 acres (650,000 m²) of land in what is now Berkeley, California in 1866. But unlike the state's Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College, it lacked the funds to operate. The trustees offered to merge with the state college to their mutual advantage, but under one condition — that there not be simply a "Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College," but a "a complete university." Accordingly, the Organic Act, establishing the University of California, was signed into law on March 23, 1868. The University opened its first medical school on February 20, 1873 in San Francisco. In 1908, a "University Farm" for the College of Agriculture was established at Davis, California, which became University_of_California,_Davis in 1959. In 1919, the Legislature arranged for an existing normal school in Los Angeles to become the University's "Southern Branch." In turn, the Southern Branch became University_of_California,_Los_Angeles in 1927. The Riverside, California campus was founded as the Citrus Experiment Station in 1907 and was elevated to campus status in 1954. The San Diego, California campus was founded as a marine station in 1912 and became University_of_California,_San_Diego in 1959. Campuses were established in Santa Barbara, California in 1958, and in both Santa Cruz, California and Irvine, California in 1965. University of California, Merced will open in 2005 as the first university built in the 21st century. ==Academics== The University of California is exceptionally distinguished and influential within academia. UC researchers and faculty are responsible for 5,505 inventions and 2,497 patents. UC researchers create 3 new inventions per day. At 32 million items, the University of California library system contains the largest collection in the world after the Library of Congress and the British_Library. Collectively, the system currently counts amongst its faculty (as of 2002): *389 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences *5 Fields Medal recipients *19 Fulbright Program Scholars *25 MacArthur Fellows *254 members of the National Academy of Sciences *91 members of the National Academy of Engineering *13 National Medal of Science Laureates *28 Nobel Prize Laureates *106 members of the Institute of Medicine ==Governance== The University of California is governed by the Regents of the University of California, as required by the current Constitution of the State of California. 18 regents are appointed by the Governor of California for 12-year terms. One member is a student appointed for a one-year term. There are also 7 ''ex officio'' members — the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Speaker of the Assembly, Superintendent of Public Instruction, president and vice president of the Alumni Associations of UC, and the UC President. The Academic Senate, made up of faculty members, is empowered by the Regents to set academic policies. In addition, the systemwide faculty chair and vice-chair sit on the Board of Regents as non-voting members. The Regents appoint a president to run the entire system. The UC Office of the President is located in downtown Oakland and effectively serves as the system headquarters. Individual campuses are managed by chancellors, who are given a great degree of autonomy. ===List of UC Presidents=== # John LeConte (1868-1870, acting); Henry Durant (1870-1872) # Daniel Coit Gilman (1872-1875) # John LeConte (1876-1881) # W.T. Reid (1881-1885) # Edward S. Holden (1885-1888) # Horace Davis (1888-1890) # Martin Kellogg (1890-1893, acting) (1893-1899) # Benjamin Ide Wheeler (1899-1919) # David Prescott Barrows (1919-1923) # William Wallace Campbell (1923-1930) # Robert Gordon Sproul (1930-1958) # Clark Kerr (1958-1967); Harry R. Wellman (1967, acting) # Charles J. Hitch (1968-1975) # David S. Saxon (1975-1983) # David P. Gardner (1983-1992) # Jack W. Peltason (1992-1995) # Richard C. Atkinson (1995-2003) # Robert C. Dynes (2003-present) ==Campuses== * University of California, Berkeley * University of California, Davis * University of California, Hastings * University of California, Irvine * University of California, Los Angeles * University of California, Merced * University of California, Riverside * University of California, San Diego * University of California, San Francisco * University of California, Santa Barbara * University of California, Santa Cruz ==Administration== While the UC campuses are operated fairly efficiently, the system does have a reputation among its students and alumni for mediocre customer service. The most common symptoms are the long lines which students often must stand in to get even the simplest administrative tasks accomplished, the long wait times before phone calls are answered, and the overcomplicated paperwork that is always required for everything. During the 1990s, some campuses (like UCLA) aggressively streamlined many internal procedures with Web applications. Others (like UC Berkeley) were slower to adapt — as of 2005, Berkeley students still enroll in classes via the aging Tele-BEARS system, which is a Web interface on top of an older touch-tone telephone system. In turn, UC's customer service problems may have something to do with the fact that UC campuses generally lag behind comparable universities, in terms of the percentage of alumni that give back to their alma mater. ==Peripheral enterprises== From the very beginning, the University of California has had a long tradition of involvement in many interesting enterprises that are often geographically or organizationally separate from its general campuses. For example, UC Davis began as the University Farm. ===National laboratories=== The University of California manages three United States Department of Energy National Laboratories on behalf of the United States Department of Energy: * Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory * Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory * Los Alamos National Laboratory The UC's ties to the laboratories have occasionally sparked controversy and protest among the academics and students within the system, as all three laboratories have been intimately linked with the development of nuclear weapons. For example, Lawrence Berkeley Lab worked on separating uranium isotopes during World War II, and the Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore labs exclusively designed the nation's nuclear weapons until their shift into stockpile stewardship at the end of the Cold War). The UC ties to the labs, however, have outlasted all periods of internal controversy, though recent questions about improper oversight procedures may call the relationship into question again. Recently, the Department of Energy has for the first time opened up the Los Alamos contract for bidding to other vendors besides the University of California. ===Observatories=== The University of California manages two Observatory as a multi-campus research unit headquartered at its Santa Cruz campus. *Lick Observatory *Keck Observatory ===Hospitals=== The University of California has medical schools at Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco, and each medical school has an associated teaching hospital which is owned and operated by UC. Davis's teaching hospital is located in Sacramento while the four other medical schools have their teaching hospitals on the main university campus. All five teaching hospitals are highly regarded throughout the United States. UCLA Medical Center in particular is consistently ranked by ''U.S. News and World Report'' as the top hospital on the West Coast. In the latter half of the 20th century, the UC hospitals became the core of full-fledged regional health systems; they were gradually supplemented by many outpatient clinics, offices, and institutes. San Diego County, California actually shut down its own public hospital and contracted out its healthcare responsibilities to UCSD. ===UC Extension=== For over a century, the University has operated a continuing education program for working adults and professionals. At present, UC Extension enrolls over 500,000 students each year in over 17,000 courses. One of the reasons for its huge size is that UC Extension is the dominant provider of Continuing Legal Education and Continuing Medical Education in California. ===Miscellaneous=== *UCLA operates both its own on-campus hotel, the UCLA Guest House, and a lavish conference center at Lake Arrowhead, California. *According to the ''Daily Bruin'' campus newspaper, UCLA is so well-known in Asia that the university has licensed its trademark to 15 UCLA-branded stores across East Asia. [http://www.dailybruin.ucla.edu/news/articles.asp?ID=32621] The stores offer East Asian consumers the ability to buy UCLA-branded apparel locally, as opposed to having to visit Southern California or shop online. *UC Berkeley's California Alumni Association operates travel excursions for alumni (and their families) under its "BearTreks" brand. BearTreks is unusual in that the tour guides are usually Berkeley professors. CAA also operates an exclusive resort in the Sierra Nevada, the Lair of the Golden Bear, also just for Cal alumni and their families. ===Other affiliated institutions=== *Hastings College of the Law *San Francisco Art Institute *The University of California Center for Animal Alternatives ==See also== *Colleges and universities *California State University - The other university system in California * University of California Washington Center ==External links== * [http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/ Official site] * [http://www.ucop.edu Office of the President] * [http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/CalHistory/charter.html Charter] * [http://www.ucolick.org/ UC Observatories] University of California Universities and colleges in California

This article is a selected entry at Template:March 23 selected anniversaries (may be in HTML comment) === Questionable Claims === ------ Can someone provide a cite for the claim that the majority of nobel laureates work at the University of California? I find that rather hard to accept with some evidence. User:Lisiate 20:36, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC) :For now the claim has been toned down -- it says "largest number", since majority is clearly an impossiblity. It appears that the UC system [http://www.ucop.edu/news/archives/2003/oct08art2.htm claims] 45 faculty "affiliated" with the university, although (as with other schools) this seems to include ex-faculty who won the prize (at least in part) for work done while at UC. User:Joelwest 05:48, 2 Apr 2004 (UTC) === Geography Errors === Someone keeps claiming that UCSD is not in San Diego but in La Jolla. UCSD is in something that claims to be a La Jolla mailing address, but it does not have a La Jolla zip code (it has its own zip code). And the claim that La Jolla is a suburb is misleading, since in Southern California "suburb" normally means "a smaller city outside the main city". La Jolla is entirely within the city limits of San Diego, and has been since UCSD was founded in 1959. Claiming UCSD is in La Jolla not San Diego would be like * claiming UCLA is in Westwood not Los Angeles, or * UCSF is in Parnassus Heights not San Francisco, or * UCSB is in Goleta not Santa Barbara. Except, of course, UCSB is ''not'' in Santa Barbara, but [http://www.esm.ucsb.edu/admissions/life_at_bren.html is in] the City of Goleta, California, a separate city. If in the individual campus pages someone wants to remark that some campus is located in the XXX neighborhood of the city, that's certainly accurate and a NPOV. User:Joelwest 05:48, 2 Apr 2004 (UTC) ==Relative age of campuses== Is there a dispute about the age of the campuses? Several campuses that are now degree-granting universities began as outposts, like Davis and San Diego, and then became universities much later. -User:Willmcw 01:26, 23 Dec 2004 (UTC)

== Initial comments == I received the following from User:Allyunion on my talk page: ''I just wanted to stay that it looks horribly uneven with the list of campuses on two lines, with the bottom line much much smaller than the top. The 6 campuses on the top, and the 4 campuses on the bottom made it at least a bit nicer. It just looks so... uneven to me with the 8 campuses on top and the 2 campuses on the bottom. ''Perhaps it would be better to include a table within a table and put five campus on top and five campuses on the bottom? Right now, I think it looks messy. Not having it one line or not having it look even just doesn't really work. I agree that it looks uneven and someone with the html skills should fix it, but we also have to take into account how it would look on smaller (eg 800 x 600 px) screens. --User:JiangUser talk:Jiang 21:59, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC) : I have HTML skills, just lazy ^^;; - User:Allyunion 07:54, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC) === Wiki + HTML Table === Rather than editing the template itself and having disagreements over the look, I'll put my suggested change here:

The third one I just put it up for the heck of it. - User:Allyunion 06:32, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC) ==The options compared== (via edit conflict, written before you posted the differnt codes) I converted to a 800 x 600 screen and the options looked like this: --User:JiangUser talk:Jiang 06:39, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC) == 800 by 600 resolution == By the way, we can't always please everyone at every screensize. Granted, 800 X 600 is a worthy resolution to consider, but anything smaller, such as 640 X 480 isn't really worth considering. The majority of users I believe use 1024 X 768, unless they are old -- then they use 800 X 600. Under the 800 X 600 resolution, the current template fits on three lines, with Santa Cruz on the last line -- orphaned alone. I really think that the consideration for a 640 X 480 should not be a high priority in this case. There is about 35 pixels from the Template border of the article entry to the table border of the navigational menu on the left side. On the right side, there is about 132 pixels left under a 800 X 600 resolution. Besides, the only reason anyone uses a smaller resolution is because they can't read the text -- which means having the text small doesn't help at all. - User:Allyunion 06:45, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC) == Looking it at 800 X 600 == I'm using FireFox, under FireFox it's three lines... == Trying without a margin... ==

Notes: Table is now set at 450px. This WELL should work under a 640 X 480, but my laptop doesn't support that resolution so I can't test that. I've added the style margin comment, but removed the style width comment in favor for a standard table width parameter since I'm using HTML code. Notes: Restoring the code to original format, with margin, centers, etc. By the way, div align tags are now favored over center tags. - User:Allyunion 07:48, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC) :The problem with all these variations is that the spacing is inconsistent, making the table look messy. A | mark works to separate adjacent links. I think by the looks of it, breaking into tables like this isn't going to work. This is how I found the template a couple of days ago, and changed it; it looked like this: [http://yath.phreadom.net/uctemplate.png uctemplate.png]. This design has problems: *It seemed to be designed to have two rows, with a break separating them, but it's a fixed-width table. This is bound to break, and it did, with the first row wrapping a bit, then the br, then the second row. *Even if it hadn't wrapped like that, the rows are not centered. *The extra vertical bar at the end of the top row doesn't look good. Hope you like the new version. --User:Yath 15:11, 11 Sep 2004 (UTC) == No objection... == If there is no objection, seeing as you haven't responded in awhile, I will now put up the new template. --User:Allyunion 06:25, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC) == No complaints? == Eh...
