TypographyTypography (from the Greek words ''typos'' = form and ''grapho'' = write) is the art and technique of selecting and arranging type styles, point sizes, line lengths, leading, character spacing, and word spacing for typeset applications. These applications can be physical or digital. The two primary functions of typography are the presentation of text in a manner that is not only easy to read but also visually engaging. The latter function of typography may be expressed in two ways: through color and the atmosphere or feel of the printed material. Other typographic issues that a typographer involved with the traditional printing press might be interested in are: paper selection, ink choice, and the printing method. Typography is performed by list of typographers. Contrast typography with orthography, a method of representing the sounds of a language by written or printed symbols and the study of correct spelling according to established usage. Typography is broader than type design, the art of designing typeface – the size and style of the letters or characters. == See also == * Calligraphy * Computers and Typesetting * Desktop publishing * Em (typography) * Graphic design * Homoglyph * Justification (typesetting) * Kerning * Leading * Ligature (typography) * List of typographers * Lorem ipsum * Mixed case * Paragraph * Printing * Printing press * Orthography * Quotation mark * Serif * Text figures * Tracking * typeface * List of typographic features * typographic unit * Typesetting * Widow (typesetting) and Orphan (typesetting) * Word processor ==Reference== * Robert Bringhurst (2002). Design Publishing Graphic design TypographyI don't think type design is separate from typography. agree? User:Clubmarx 20:10, Nov 24, 2004 (UTC) : Technically, ''typography'' is composing pages ''with type'', while ''type design'' usually means the design ''of type''. However, there's little enough material here now, that these could be merged into Typography until they grow enough to warrant a separate article. ''—User:Mzajac 20:25, 2004 Nov 24 (UTC)'' I agree with Michael - there is a subtle difference. Type design is concerned with the process of designing the font characters and families as a whole, whereas Typography is the entire discipline of working with type to create pages of text, etc. User:Agendum | User talk:Agendum 23:59, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC) Yes, I see now.
