The castrum established was named ''Potaissa'' and became a municipium, then a colonia. In the Middle Ages, Turda was the residence of the Transylvanian Diet (assembly). Turda was the site of the Peace of Turda, which guaranteed religious freedom in Transylvania in 1568.
