Turda



Turda (Hungarian_language: ''Torda'', German_language: ''Thorenburg'') (population: 55,770) is a city in Cluj, Romania, situated on the Aries river river. == History == Founded as a Dacian city under the name ''Dierna'', Turda was conquered by the Ancient Rome. The castrum established was named ''Potaissa'' and became a municipium, then a colonia. In the Middle Ages, Turda was the residence of the Transylvanian Diet (assembly). Turda was the site of the Peace of Turda, which guaranteed religious freedom in Transylvania in 1568. The Romans began extracting salt from the nearby salt mines, which were used for this purpose until their closure in 1932. The mines have been reopened for tourism. Cluj Romanian cities
