Tumbarumba is a small town and Local Government Area in New South Wales, Australia, about 500 kilometers southwest of Sydney. Tumbarumba Shire is located on the South West Slopes of the Snowy Mountains. To the east, Mount Kosciuszko, the Snowy Mountain's highest peak, can be seen. Tumbarumba Shire's southern boundary is the Murray River. In 2001 the population of Tumbarumba Shire was 3727. The community was established in the 1850s after gold was discovered in the district. Gold mining petered out in the 1930s, and the region's economy now depends on agriculture and tourism.
