Tumbarumba, New South WalesTumbarumba is a small town and Local Government Area in New South Wales, Australia, about 500 kilometers southwest of Sydney. Tumbarumba Shire is located on the South West Slopes of the Snowy Mountains. To the east, Mount Kosciuszko, the Snowy Mountain's highest peak, can be seen. Tumbarumba Shire's southern boundary is the Murray River. In 2001 the population of Tumbarumba Shire was 3727. The community was established in the 1850s after gold was discovered in the district. Gold mining petered out in the 1930s, and the region's economy now depends on agriculture and tourism. The timber industry dominates the Shires economy. ==Tumbarumba trivia== *It has been suggested that in Australian English, the term ''tumbarumba'' is an example of the figure of speech called tmesis, in which a word or phrase is inserted into another word, often for humorous effect. This perhaps derives from the poem ''Tumba-bloody-rumba'', by John O'Grady (perhaps better known by his pen-name 'Nino Cullota'), the Australian author of ''They're a Weird Mob'', in its time a popular guide to supposed Australian cultural and linguistic habits. *In late 1963, Johnny Devlin, a New Zealander, recorded the single "Stomp The Tumbarumba", a song covered later by, among others, the rock band Hoodoo Gurus. ''Tumbarumba'' in the song's title may or may not have something to do with name of the town. ==See also== *Mannus Correctional Centre ==External links== * [http://www.tumbashire.nsw.gov.au/ Tumbarumba Shire Council] * [http://www.dotars.gov.au/auslink/green_paper/submissions/lgov_NSW/lgov_tumbarumba_council.htm Tumbarumba Shire Council submission to AusLink Green Paper concerning regional transport networks] * [http://www.rrdb.com.au/rivprofile/tumbarumba.htm Demographic profile of Tumbarumba Shire in 2001] == External References == * [http://www.bushpoetry.com.au/Default.aspx?tabid=60&newsType=CategoryView&CategoryID=3 Discussion on ''Lost Poetry'' web site of authorship of the poem ''Tumba-bloody-rumba''] Local Government Areas of New South Wales Towns in New South Wales See other meanings of words starting from letter: TTA | TB | TC | TD | TE | TF | TG | TH | TI | TJ | TK | TL | TŁ | TM | TN | TO | TP | TR | TS | TU | TW | TX | TY | TZ |Words begining with Tumbarumba,_New_South_Wales: Tumbarumba,_New_South_Wales |
