TricksterIn the study of mythology, folklore and religion, a trickster is a god, goddess, spiritual being or human hero who breaks the rules of the gods or nature, sometimes maliciously (for example, Loki) but usually with ultimately positive effects. Often, the rule-breaking takes the form of tricks (eg. Eris) or thievery. Tricksters can be cunning or foolish or both; they are often very funny even when they are considered sacred and are performing important cultural tasks. In many cultures, such as Slavic mythology folktales and American Indian lore, the trickster and the culture hero are combined. To illustrate, Prometheus, in Greek mythology, stole fire from the gods to give it to humans. He is more of a culture hero than a trickster. In many North American Indian mythologies, the coyote spirit stole fire from the gods (or stars or sun) and is more of a trickster than a culture hero. This is primarily because of other stories involving the coyote spirit; Prometheus was a Titan (mythology), whereas a coyote is usually seen as a jokester and prankster. Among the American Indians, the trickster figures often exhibit gender variability, changing gender roles and engaging in homosexuality These personages are said to have a two-spirit nature. The Trickster is an example of a Carl Jung Archetype. The Fool survives in modern playing cards as the Joker. ==Tricksters== *Abenaki mythology ... Azeban *Akan mythology ... That's quite revealing, but surely notUser:Norwikian 20:52, 23 Nov 2003 (UTC) ---- I've heard several commentators claim that Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck are both modern incarnations of the trickster figure. Does anyone think this should be included in the article (or is it opening a floodgate?) -- User:Finlay McWalter 11:18, 21 Dec 2003 (UTC) ---- I just added Maui (mythology) to the "Hawai`ian" section, without noticing that Maui was already listed in the "Polynesian" section. But it would seem that If both sections are to be present, then Hawai`ian should be a subcategory of Polynesian. No? -- User:Dominus 00:35, 16 Mar 2004 (UTC) ---- What about Hindu mythology? Don't I recall that Krishna was something of a trickster at least in childhood? User:Ross Burgess 11:24, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC) ==Various problems== There's a good deal of literature on the Trickster, none of which seems to have been read to compose this entry. (Terry Pratchett does not provide a secure starting point.) The entry needs work. In brief: *''Animals associated with tricksters include coyotes, ravens, and foxes.'' This is not universally true. Statements like this are only useful within some context. Please identify the culture, perhaps expand to include other trickster animals and return to the entry. *''Intellectual'' Prometheus was not turned into a prototype of an intellectual until the early 19th century, when the "trickster" figure was far from anyone's mind. *The Tarot is not ''often claimed to be a combination of the archetypes from all human mythologies'' except perhaps by storefront fake gypsies across from the bus station. ''The European Tarot represents the Trickster as the Fool card.'' No, the Fool is the simple primordial human at the mercy of the World, one of the few certain identifications in the Tarot. *''Typically tricky, the Fool is numbered both higher and lower than all the other Major Arcana.'' Numbers are a recent addition to printed Tarot cards. The Fool retains his primordial unnumbered status. High and low numbers are more relevant to Canasta than Tarot. --User:Wetman 08:44, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC) How is the Jackalope a trickster? That'd be better classified as a hoax. And how do Hephaestos and Hermes Trismegistus qualify? --User:Tydaj 01:43, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC) Recommended reading ''Trickster Makes This World: Mischief, Myth, and Art,'' by Lewis Hyde. Well researched and readable. Add Picasso, John Cage and Dylan as modern tricksters too.--User:Jayqq 18:26, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC) Trickster==Welcome== Hello , and Wikipedia:Welcome, newcomers to Wikipedia.
