Traffic

See Wikipedia:Statistics and Wikipedia:Announcements. Note: recent statistics are now automatically compiled, and can be found at http://www.wikipedia.org/stats/ ''A proper explanation of hits vs. files served vs. pages served needs to go here.'' ''The effect of the new page-caching code on measured traffic should also be explained.'' Alexa.com independently compiles traffic ranking figures, see [http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?q=wikipedia&p=Det_W_g_40_M1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wikipedia.org%2F]. For regular tracking of this information, see Wikipedia:Awareness statistics. ------------------------------------------- Some late 2002 / early 2003 daily traffic figures for the English-language Wikipedia in hits/day: * note the apparent 7-day cycle, as well as * the one-off boost on September 11, 2002, the anniversary of the New York terrorist attacks, when many queries were made regarding topics related to the attacks. * traffic in January 2003 was well down on previous traffic, due to a problem with robots.txt causing Google to lose most Wikipedia pages from its index; this problem has now been fixed, and the Google index should start to pick up new pages as the site is spidered Traffic data is measured in hits per day for each 24-hour period, from 00:00:00 UTC to 23:59:99 UTC. Traffic

In many parts of the world traffic is generally organized, flowing in lanes of travel for a particular direction, with interchanges, traffic signals, or traffic signage at intersectons to facilitate the orderly and timely flow of traffic. Trafic can be separated into vehicular, non-vehicular (bicycling) and pedestrian traffic. Vehicles also generally travel approximately at the same speed on a given roadway. Organized traffic typically reduces travel time. Though vehicles wait at some intersections, wait time at others is much shorter. Organized traffic degenerates to disorganized with an unexpected occurrence, be it road construction, an accident, or an animal obstructing the road. On particularly busy freeways, a disruption can persist until traffic thins. William Beaty observed persistent disruptions and named the phenomenon [http://www.amasci.com/amateur/traffic/traffic1.html traffic waves]. Simulations of organized traffic frequently involve queuing theory and stochastic processes. == Unorganized traffic == Unorganized traffic occurs in the absence of lanes and signals. Roads do not have lanes, though drivers tend to keep to the appropriate side if the road is wide enough. Drivers frequently overtake other drivers, and obstructions are not uncommon. Intersections have no signals or signage, and a particular road at a busy intersection may be dominant (that is, its traffic flows) until a break in traffic, at which time the dominance shifts to the other road where vehicles are queued. At the intersection of two perpendicular roads, a traffic jam results if four vehicles face each other side-on. == Which side? == Brian Lucas answers the question, About 34% of the world by country population drives on the left, and 66% keeps right. By roadway miles, about 72% drive on the right. ==See also== *Rules of the road *Traffic psychology *Traffic congestion *Transport ==External links== * [http://www.amasci.com/amateur/traffic/traffic1.html Traffic Waves] * [http://www.best.bc.ca/ Better Environmentally Sound Transportation] * [http://www.greenercars.com/indexplus.html Welcome to GreenerCars.com: The online home of ACEEE's Green Book] Transportation nds:Verkehr zh-tw:交通

Traffic

You know what would be interesting to see? Wikipedia hits from non-logged-in users... this would be a reasonble approximation of "customers" as opposed to "staff". I don't know if that's a feasible statistic to collect... - User:Khendon Removed comment from article: :October 28, 2001, Wikipedia began receiving a substantially increased amount of traffic from Google, when they updated their indexing system. This will probably result in a permanent traffic increase of over 20% compared with the few weeks leading up to yesterday. Google already was far and away the most important source of traffic for Wikipedia. If the increase is permanent, then in terms of new personnel and increased article production and editing, we can expect that this will have a long-term effect similar to that of a major news article or of a Slashdotting. since the stats do not appear to support this interpretation of a sudden jump that differs from previous patterns. ---- :2003 Mar 08, 169019 :2003 Mar 09, 179610 :2003 Mar 10, 246672 :2003 Mar 11, 286787, big slowdown on this day :2003 Mar 12, 316539, back to over 300k, problems with timeouts Why the sudden leap over the last few days? Is there any more detailed analysis of the last few days to see what the most popular articles have been? - User:Khendon 10:07 Mar 13, 2003 (UTC)
