TownshipThe term township generally means the district or area associated with a town. However in some systems, especially in the United States, no town need be involved, and indeed in the Scottish Highlands the term describes a very small agricultural community. Specific use of the term to describe political subdivisions has varied by country, usually to describe a local rural or semi-rural government within a county. *In Canada, two kinds of township occur in common use. See: Township (Canada) **In eastern Canada a township is one form of the subdivision of a county. This is translated into French as ''canton (subnational entity)'' in Quebec. **In western Canada townships exist only for the purpose of land division by the Dominion Land Survey and do not form administrative units. *In the People's Republic of China, townships are found at the fourth level of the Political divisions of China, together with ethnic townships, town of Chinas and subdistricts. See Township of China. *In England townships became obsolete long ago: the term referred to a subdivision used to administer a large parish. See Township (England) * In New Zealand the designation of "township" traditionally refers to a small town: a place that in Britain might qualify as a village or a hamlet (place) . * In the Highlands and Islands of Scotland ''township'' means a traditional croft, Scotland township - that is, a group of agricultural smallholdings, each with its own few hectares of pasture and arable ground (in-bye land), but with a substantial tract of unimproved upland grazings held in common, which can range from a hundred to a few thousand hectares. Each Crofting Township comprises a formal legal unit. *In South Africa under Apartheid the term ''township'' came to mean a residential development which confined non-whites (Africans, "coloureds" and Indians) who lived near or worked in white-only communities. Soweto ("SOuth-WEst TOwnships") furnishes a well-known example. See Township (South Africa) *In the United States, two kinds of township occur. A U.S. state may have neither, only one, or both of these. In states that have both, the boundaries usually coincide. See Township (United States) **A survey township is a unit of land measure defined by the Public Land Survey System. These are generally referenced by a numbering system. **A civil township is a widely-used unit of local government. These are generally given names. *In the context of Russia, the Soviet Union, and Commonwealth of Independent States states, the term is sometimes used to denote a small semi-urban, sometimes industrial, settlement and used to translate the terms ''поселок городского типа'' (townlet (p.g.t.)), ''посад'' (''posad''), ''местечко'' (''mestechko'', from Polish "miasteczko", a small town; in the cases of predominant Jewish population the latter is sometimes translated as shtetl). Subnational entities TownshipI added a disambiguation message, thought that's appropriate since this page contains multiple definitions and points to other pages styled "Township". Am I overlooking some reason this might not be appropriate? User:Ellsworth 22:38, 26 May 2004 (UTC) :This is more of an article than the usual list-style disambiguation page. It may be compare to chancellor, imperial guard, and municipality rather than, e.g. canton (disambiguation). Rather then removing the text, I'd remove msg:disambig -- User:Docu See other meanings of words starting from letter: TTA | TB | TC | TD | TE | TF | TG | TH | TI | TJ | TK | TL | TŁ | TM | TN | TO | TP | TR | TS | TU | TW | TX | TY | TZ |Words begining with Township: Township Township Townships Townships_in_Michigan Townships_in_Minnesota Townships_in_New_Hampshire Townships_in_New_Jersey Townships_in_North_Dakota Townships_in_Ohio Townships_in_Ohio Townships_in_Pennsylvania Townships_in_Taiwan Townships_in_the_Republic_of_China Township_(Canada) Township_(disambiguation) Township_(England) Township_(New_Jersey) Township_(South_Africa) Township_(U.S.) Township_(United_States) Township_(United_States) Township_157-30,_Minnesota Township_157-30,_MN Township_158-30,_Minnesota Township_158-30,_MN Township_and_Village_Enterprise Township_and_Village_Enterprise Township_hall Township_High_School_District Township_High_School_District,_IL Township_High_School_District,_Illinois Township_High_School_District,_Illinois Township_High_School_District_(Illinois) Township_of_Cavan-Millbrook-North_Monaghan,_Ontario Township_of_China Township_of_Dymond,_Ontario Township_of_Gordon,_Ontario Township_of_McGarry,_Ontario Township_of_North_Dumfries Township_of_Osgoode,_Ontario Township_of_Spring_Arbor Township_of_Spring_Arbor,_Michigan Township_of_Washington,_New_Jersey Township_of_Washington,_NJ Township_of_Wellesley Township_of_Wilmot Township_of_Woolwich Township_of_York,_Ontario Township_village_enterprises |
