ToughnessIn materials science and metallurgy, toughness is the resistance to fracture of a material when suddenly stress (physics). It is defined as the amount of energy that a material can absorb before breaking, and can be found by finding the area (i.e., by taking the integral) underneath the stress-strain curve. ==See also== *Tensile strength ==External links== *[http://www.key-to-steel.com/Articles/Art43.htm Engineering Stress-strain Curve] Materials science Metallurgy Toughness\"...when suddenly stressed.\" : is the suddenly important/essential? Looks quite hard to pin down, and not very relevant surely? Out of my field, so I'll leave this one to someone more knowledgeable.
