* Figures of speech and shorthands are called term (language). *Specialised terms are characterised as technical terms, or sometimes terms of art. * A term (mathematics) is a basic component of a mathematics Expression (mathematics). * In traditional logic, term came to mean a referring expression, but only through the Latin ''terminus'' (so that terms were 'terminal for analysis'). * In type theory, "term" is used for the linguistics constructs. * A term can refer to a period of time, for example: ** the term served in office by an incumbent; ** the term served in prison by a convicted criminal; ** an academic term – a number of weeks worth of study at a school or university ** the term of a mortgage; ** "long-term" and "short-term"; ** the term of a patent, the period during which it is enforceable - ''e.g. term of patent in the United States''. * In contracts, the terms are the details of an agreement, often the amounts of money.

Term

A term is a word or phrase considered to be a textual unit that can not be altered without changing its exact meaning (rules of usage and/or denotation) which is crucial for some reason. The use of a term is especially of import in translation where synonyms are otherwise permissible. In this respect terms behave like a name, or a unique identifier with the unsuing consequences. Normally each discipline has its own collection of terms or jargon set where the meaning of items are fully explained and held in term banks. This body of knowledge of/on terms is often called terminology. When terms are collected, they are usually sorted in aphabetical order, which is alright, as long as you do not want to expand it to be a multi-lingual dictionary of terms, where you need a numerical or mixed system of classification of terms to allow for cross-language searches. Terms that behave like names are often used to identify interrelated objects of a science or a field. The end product of such a venture is a nomenclature of a discipline that may have several thousand items, now sorted according to the inner logic of the discipline in question. Despite the fact that such nomenclatures are readily available as input for multi-lingual dictinaries the information content of such vast bodies of knowledge is underutilised due to the ad hoc nature of and lack of innovative concept in dictionary compilation works/projects.
