Stratellite

Stratellite is a brand name for a proposed high-altitude stratosphere airship that would provide a stationary telecommunication platform for various types of wireless signals currently carried by communications towers or satellites. ==Details == High-altitude airships, like the Stratellite, would hover lower than a satellite, but far above the jet stream and even above most weather, in the stratosphere approximately 13 miles (20 km) above the earth. A single unit could then send broadband, mobile phone signals and digital television and radio to a large area. Compared to a satellite it would reduce lag (by a factor of about 2000 for geostationary satellites, 15 for Low Earth orbiting satellite), but it covers a smaller area of land, while, compared to terrestrial communications towers, it would cover a larger area with lagtimes that depend more on the internal communications equipment than on distance. While the Stratellite could send some signals to an area the size of Texas or France (780,000 km²), the broadband needs of such a large area would probably greatly exceed the capabilities of a single unit. Wireless signals can be sent to, and received from an area with a diameter of 200 miles (320 kilometres), but terrain features and man-made structures could partially and locally block the signal at the edges. Also, since the Stratellite is designed to regularly return to the surface for maintainance (see specifications, below), some overlap and redundancy would be required to maintain continuous service. Sanswire, the company behind the Stratellite, plans to use them initially in major metropolitan areas. Proponents claim the promise of high-altitude communications platforms like the Stratellite is to do away with the need for terrestrial broadcast towers, and costly and time consuming hardware updates. Hardware updates to a single unit would effectively update an entire grid of virtual broadcast towers. This would also mean that an area without terrestrial communications towers, such as a developing nation or a wartorn country could set up a national broadband grid with relative ease. The unmanned Stratellite would be powered by solar cells and propelled by electric motors, and would resemble a 245-foot-long (75-metre) double-tailed whale when complete, over twice as long as (and roughly 8 times the volume of) the Blue whale. == Specifications == * Length: 245 ft (75 m) * Width: 145 ft (44 m) * Height: 87 ft (26.5 m) * Volume: 1.3 million ft³ (37,000 m³) * Dual envelopes, both made of Dyneema (aka Spectra) * Propelled by electric motors powered by solar cell covering the outer envelope * Held in position by 6 onboard GPS units connected to the ship's engines * Outer envelope covered in film photovoltaic (solar) units manufactured by Iowa Thin Film Technologies. * Payload capacity: 3,000 lb (1400 kg) * Maximum altitude: 70,000 ft (21 km) * Desired altitude: 65,000 ft (20 km) * Lifting gas consists of Helium and Nitrogen * Line-of-sight to a 300,000 mile² (780,000 km²) area * Maximum duration aloft: 18 months == Company details == The word Stratellite is a trademark of Sanswire Network, LLC, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of GlobeTel Communications Corp. (OTCBB:GTEL). The company held a summit in January 2005 to discuss commercial, international and military opportunities. On April 12th, 2005, Sanswire 1 was shown to the public. Currently Stratellite Europe is being set up, which will try to introduce Stratellites to Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Sanswire is not the first company to propose such a craft. Similar proposals have been made by Advanced Technologies Group (ATG) in Bedford, England, SkyLINK, Inc, in England, and SkyTower Inc., a subsidiary of AeroVironment Inc. in Monrovia, California, in the United States. ==See also == * Orbital airship * Blimp * Airship * Low Earth Orbit == External links == *[http://www.sanswire.com/ Sanswire Networks] Airships
