Stockholm

Stockholm is the capital and the largest Cities of Sweden. Administratively, the "City of Stockholm" is a Municipalities of Sweden within Stockholm County. As a capital, Stockholm is the site of the Government of Sweden and the Parliament of Sweden of Sweden. It is also the residence of the Monarch of Sweden, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. The first part of the name — stock — means logs, while the last part — holm — means small island. The city is said to have been founded by Birger Jarl in order to protect Sweden from invasion from the sea by foreign navies and to stop pillage of the cities such as Sigtuna on Lake M�laren. The first building at Stockholm was a fortification for the purpose of controlling the traffic between the Baltic Sea and M�laren. == Politics == The city is subdivided into 18 boroughs, which carry responsibility for primary school, social, leisure and cultural services within their respective areas. Unofficially Stockholm is divided into three major parts: Stockholm City Centre (''Innerstaden''), South Stockholm (''S�derort'') and West Stockholm (''V�sterort''). The three most popular men's football teams in the Stockholm region are Djurg�rden IF, Hammarby IF and AIK. However, AIK is not based in the municipality of Stockholm but in its northern neighbour Solna Municipality. All three clubs have women's teams, although Djurg�rden's women's elite team is called Djurg�rden/�lvsj� after a merger with �lvsj� AIK. The clubs also all have ice hockey teams, but currently (2004-2005 season) only Djurg�rden plays in the highest division, Elitserien (also known as the Swedish Elite League). One problem though is that it is an article both on the municipality of stockholm and the metropolitan area of stockholm. Some examples : *The Karolinska Institute is situated in the Solna Municipality, not in Stockholm *The University College of South Stockholm is situated in the municipalitys of Huddinge Municipality, Haninge Municipality and S�dert�lje Municipality, not in Stockholm *The football team AIK is based in the Solna Municipality. I suggest that things related to other municipalitys are placed under each municipalitys own article OR to the article Metropolitan Stockholm. The University College of South Stockholm however is no longer located in S�dert�lje (that is not even located in the Greater Stockholm Area). To solve this, the Swedish Wikipedia has split all municipalities into a city part and a municipality part. The "h" in Stockholm is really never pronounced unless you're actually spelling the name out. It gets lost with the "k" and instead creates a long consonant. You can hear it in the recording quite clearly, and that is as far as I know how most people pronounce "Stockholm" in Sweden. I respectfully suggest that the transcription should be changed to include the 'h', for the following three reasons: 1. There is no rule in Swedish that prescribes aitch-dropping. The general rule is that aitches should be pronounced. 2. When making a phonetic transcription, you should write the word as it sounds when pronounced carefully, not when it is slurred over in rapid speech. For instance, you would not give the pronunciation of the English word 'them' as 'em', even though it is sometimes pronounced that way. 3. However, for countries, the WikiProject_Countries#Facts_table rule is that the full name in the local language(s) should be used as caption for the infobox. There seems to be a tendency to do the same for cities. Paris has "Ville de Paris", Oslo has "Oslo kommune", Helsinki has "Helsingin kaupunki/Helsingfors stad" and Lisbon has "Cidade de Lisboa". (On the other hand Warsaw has "Warsaw" and Copenhagen has "Copenhagen, Denmark", but I wouldn't read that much into that.)
