SourceForge

SourceForge is a collaborative revision control. SourceForge software is sold by VA Software. It provides a front-end to a range of software development lifecycle services and integrates with a number of open source applications (such as PostgreSQL and Concurrent Versions System). SourceForge.net is a centralized location for software developers to control and manage open source software development, and acts as a source code repository. SourceForge.net is hosted by VA Software and runs a version of the SourceForge software. A large number of open source projects are hosted on the site (it had reached 100,000 by May 2005), although it does contain a lot of dormant or single-user projects. The Free Software Foundation created their GNU Savannah as a response to the perceived proprietarization (closed source state) of the SourceForge software. Several collaborative sites now exist that utilise the SourceForge software. The Sourceforge code was once available publicly, but later VA Software decided not to make any further open source releases. Last officially available code was 2.5, and the CVS version just before closing was 2.61. Savannah is a derived work based on the 2.0 version. In late 2003, VA Software issued the first release of SourceForge Enterprise Edition 4.x - a complete rewrite of the application as a Java-J2EE application. Reports from organizations deploying SourceForge 4.x indicate that performance and scalability are significantly greater than the SourceForge 3.x or preeceeding 2.x code base. SourceForge 4.x also supports a broad SOAP XML Web Services API for further integration and extensibility. Gforge.org: One of the Sourceforge programmers started a significant rewrite—the Gforge project—based on the last known CVS version of Sourceforge. New features have been added and free development continues there. ==See also== * :Category:SourceForge project * GNU Savannah * BerliOS ==External links== *[http://sf.net SourceForge.net homepage] *[http://sf.net/projects/wikipedia/ MediaWiki SourceForge.net Project Page] *[http://gforge.org/ Gforge Project] *[http://forge.novell.com/ Novell Forge] *[http://dev.xoops.org/ XOOPS Module Development Forge] Websites Free software Version control systems

I've cut this out, can anyone explain what the significant changes where?
A controversy erupted amongst open-source developers in February 2002 when VA significantly modified the terms and conditions of use. A number of developers unsubscribed and moved their projects to other sites such as the GNU Savannah site. Many, however, felt unable to move because of their dependence upon certain features in SourceForge (notably the compile farm).
== List of Projects hosted on SourceForge == How about this sort of a list. Might be kind of interesting. Or does this sort of list in fact already exist? : Current statistics from SourceForge: Registered Projects: 100,955 Registered Users: 1,083,958 : I believe this list would be too large to be practical. There are also literally more than 100 clones of Tetris alone. SourceForge front page does give lists of most active and most downloaded projects but these vary over time.User:85.164.107.7 17:52, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
