Soubrette1) SOUBRETTE (C’ TO C’’’) A soubrette is the stereotypically saucy and intriguing maidservent in early 20th century comic dramas or the actress that plays that part. The term can also refer to any young woman who is of this personality type in real life. A soubrette is a very light lyric soprano without the altitude of a regular soprano. Her range is A below Middle C to High F or G above middle C. The term Soubrette is a French voice classification used to describe a lyric female voice that is very light, mellow, and sweet. Her range is fairly limited and she has no extensive head voice vocal extensions and certainly no extensive coloratura. Because she rarely reaches high soprano notes, her range can be considered to rival that of the contralto or mezzo-soprano; however, the contralto has a rich and strong lower register that the soubrette usually lacks. Likewise, the mezzo-soprano has a wider range and a strength and "presence" that a true soubrette lacks. Her voice is best in the middle voice without any acrobatic vocal extremes. The soubrette voice also cannot handle large changes in vocal dynamic well, like volume or moving a note from head voice to chest, while simultaneously maintaining the same exact pitch, and thus certainly doesn't belt (music). Examples of a soubrette singer include Ileana Cotrubas and in contemporary music Britney Spears and Ciara. The thing that separates a soubrette from the standard lyric voice is the lack of range and the lightness of the vocal cords. A lyric voice is stronger and heavier than a true soubrette, which is the lightest female voice. The soubrette does its best singing in the octave between Middle C and High C or D. Any higher and the voice is well into high head voice. It also has no great depth in the chest register, since the vocal fold are nearly always small and soprano in stature and the person slight and very young. Many times a soubrette can sound so weak as if any change in vocal dynamic would cause the singer to vocal crack. The soubrette as in range is fairly rare in classical music, as classical training tends to train for two octaves or slightly more. A slight, thin young woman can sing in a very light and sweet manner, yet be vocally capable of a Soprano High B, C or D. Many soubrettes in classical music are thus sung by a lyric soprano or mezzo-soprano capable of replicating the light, sweet, mellow sound of a true soubrette. In popular music, the soubrette has been enjoying a resurgence thanks to Britney Spears, as well as the record label' current desire to create music in a key and tessitura that makes it easier to sing along. Hip-hop artists have frequently been using a soubrette (or lyric voice in a soubrette style) to sing the chorus or hook of their rap song. So strong is this current trend, artists like Ashanti (singer), despite having a lyric coloratura voice, have been singing as a soubrette, with great commerical success. Aaliyah, while basically keeping in the profile of a soubrette, with her sweet and light (almost frail) vocal chords, and young slender slight frame, had a rich lower register and actually was a lyric contralto. Janet Jackson, a lyric mezzo-soprano who actually hits D6 (D above soprano C) in ''He Doesn't Know I'm Alive'', sings many songs as a soubrette, but has sung many notes of good altitude as well. Because Janet, like Aaliyah and Ashanti, have a wider range and stronger vocal cords, they aren't soubrettes in a classic sense, but have the sweet lyric vocal style that can rival a true soubrette. ==Soubrette Profile== *Voice: ''very'' light mellow voice (sometimes almost frail), best in middle voice, no extensive coloratura, no dark or extensive chest register either. *Physical appearance: usually delicate *Roles: Despina in Cosi fan tutte; Annchen in Der Freischutz *Range: A3 - F5 (sometimes a little wider, but range isn't a soubrette strong point) Vocal_ranges SoubretteA soubrette is a lyric female voice that is light, mellow and sweet.
