Son et Lumiere

The first track from the Mars Volta's album "De-Loused in the Comatorium", it means "Sound and Light" in French. Like many of the Mars Volta's songs, it offers somewhat cryptic lyrics. Popular theories on the meaning of the song are that it represents the injection of rat poison into body of the main character Cerpin Taxt, or the rushing of Cerpin Taxt to the hospital after an overdose (sounds in the background of the song and drums could be likened to the siren of an ambulance and defibrillators). It is commonly believed that the transition from Son et Lumiere to the album's next track, Inertiatic ESP (ESP being the abbreviation of Extrasensory Perception), is Cerpin Taxt slipping into a coma, a belief that is supported by the story of Julio Venegas, one of the band members' friends from a previous band.
