Schissel==Archive locations == Conversation from October 2004 – December 2004 archived in User_talk:Schissel/Archive_10122004 User:Schissel : User_talk:Schissel 04:19, Mar 21, 2005 (UTC) == Romanticism Category == I believe we should add composers who are both important in terms of Romanticism, and who are part of the movement generally labelled Romanticism - by all means add Richard Wagner, as he certainly is part of Romanticism, even if he later departs from it. At the moment I am working on a Romantic Poets list, to replace the current one - which has 6 names, and 4 are thrown to disambiguation pages. Not very helpful. Since "Romantic" is used in musicology in a manner radically at odds with the rest of intellectual history, I think it better to list those composers important for Romanticism the movement in the top level category, even if there is some duplication. Particularly since the Romantic Composers list is meant to be comprehensive - listing virtually anyone who composed a work in the style by the broadest measure who left anything we still play even occasionally. User:Stirling Newberry 03:15, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC) I will run a script to key all of the names I've added to cats later (currently I've added about 200 articles to various cats over the last few days, and want to simply run the script once so that there are no errors.) User:Stirling Newberry 03:18, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC) Instead of war of the Romantics - what about "Brahmsians Versus Wagnerians". User:Stirling Newberry 04:56, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC) Brahms and Romanticism. Remember that Romanticism has an academic streak in it that is quite large. Romantics loved classification, codification and organization. Brahms' studies into the past were more extensive, but in line with Schumann, Mendelssohn, Chopin and Beethoven's searches into past practice. More over - they all shared the Romantic trait of seeing the past as different, and valued that archaic quality. The "unnamed second half of the 19th century"ism (called victorianism, realism and a fist full of other names), differs from the first half of the 19th century is the focus on pragmatism. The critique of the late 19th century of Romanticism (voiced by Bismarck, Wagner, Verdi among others) is that it was impractical, dreamy and incapable of fulfilling its goals by the means it had. In short, if one wanted great results, argued the late 19th century, one had to make a "Faustian" bargain, and do whatever needed to be done. In musicology terms, Brahms is a "Romantic" because Romantic is defined as the practice from Weber to Mahler, and Brahms sits squarely in the middle of that period. Roughly speaking, the period of systematic application of voiceleading to extended tonality. User:Stirling Newberry 16:28, 13 Jan 2005 (UTC) == Re: Felix Weingartner == Yeah, I noticed him in the category of Croatian musicians and was quite surprised to see him listed there. I googled quickly and found the extra information that provided the explanation. --User:Joy 22:12, 18 Jan 2005 (UTC) == Symphony 6 article == Nice start, well laid out. We need more work articles in wikipedia. User:Stirling Newberry 15:54, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC) == Sonata == Feel free to add some to the lists. I've really only had time to work on the 20th century solidly. User:Stirling Newberry 23:10, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC) ==Return of the Untagged Image project== You were kind enough to contribute to the Wikipedia:Untagged images project; I beg to draw your attention to part 2 of the project - there are about 12,000 more images in need of tagging. Any assistance you could provide would be most welcome. thanks --User:Tagishsimon User_talk:Tagishsimon ==Florida government = public domain?== You created ; I'm curious about Florida government works being public domain. Where did you see this? A search online doesn't reveal anything. --User:SPUI (User talk:SPUI) 07:59, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC) : I'll look into it (this weekend if poss.) The image-tagging pages etc. suggested that this is generally true of images created by US gov'ts federal, state etc. within certain limits, but there may well be certain states that are exceptions. User:Schissel : User_talk:Schissel 14:07, Mar 11, 2005 (UTC) There are only two states that release their images into the public domain: California and, I believe, Utah. All other states hold copyrights on their images. The templates you created are in error; please remove them. Thanks, – User:Quadell (User_talk:Quadell) (Wikipedia:Image sleuthing) 18:53, Apr 11, 2005 (UTC) == Minnesota Public Domain Images == Thanks for pointing that out about the :Image:Amy klobuchar.jpg on my usertalk page. So here is what I am wondering, can we consider it fair use if the same image is on her [http://www.klobuchar.org campaign website]? I'm not too familiar with what is fair use or not. Please let me know what you think. User:Micahmn | User talk:Micahmn 04:54, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC) :I'm using the Template:promophoto tag now, this would be OK in the :Image:Amy klobuchar.jpg instance, correct? :User:Micahmn | User talk:Micahmn 05:13, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC) == Long time no see! == Hello, Schissel! Fancy meeting you here. It's a small Internet, I guess. Hope you're doing well. User:Gwalla — User:Gwalla | User talk:Gwalla 02:31, 5 May 2005 (UTC) == Sergei Taneyev merge? == Schissel, could you take a look at the discussion on Talk:Sergei_Taneyev and Talk:List_of_string_quartets_by_Sergei_Taneyev and see if you agree with User_talk:Kelly_Martin on merging? I think the string quartet list should be kept separate, not merged, but I'm not sure how to handle disagreements on Wiki. --User:Dcnicholls 05:39, 22 May 2005 (UTC) == Edgar Allan Poe == Hi! I noticed you have previously been involved in editing this article, and it is currently being worked on to try to raise it to FA standard. If you are interested in helping improve this article once more, see Talk:Edgar_Allan_Poe#The_vast_pool_of_advice. User:Harro5 00:07, May 26, 2005 (UTC) == Cello == Hello! I've noticed that you are a classical music lover, just like me! Thanks for compiling the List of compositions for cello and orchestra- thanks! BTW, are you a cellist? I'll be working on making entries for pieces in the list... thanks for all your dedication to Wikipedia! User:Flcelloguy 20:46, 31 May 2005 (UTC) == Re Fuchs 4th string quartet == You beat me to the correction! The entry in Grove is ambiguous and the MDG notes are precise. DN ==Harlan Ellison== I reverted your Harlan Ellison edit for reasons that I do not want to go into (but with the authority of Jimbo to back me up on it). If you have a problem with it, please contact me privately. User:Danny 02:08, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC) ==Question== Schissel, I noticed that you created pages for Cello sonata, List of solo cello pieces, and List of compositions for cello and piano. Aren't they are basically the same? A cello sonata is considered a solo cello piece and is ''usually'' played with piano accompaniment. Shouldn't two (or maybe all three) be merged into one list? Tell me what you think, thanks! User:Flcelloguy 13:44, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC) ==RfA== Oh, BTW, Schissel, would you like becoming an admin? I'm going to nominate you but wanted to make sure it was OK with you first before posting your "official" nomination- when you can "officially" accept! You've done a lot of good work and deserve it- if you wish to be nominated, just drop me a message and I'll nominate you! Thanks, User:Flcelloguy 13:52, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC) :P.S. I'll be travelling the next couple of days, so bear with me if I take a few days to nominate you. My computer access might be limited... ::I've now placed your "official" nomination on WP:RfA. Please put your "official" acceptance on and answer the candidate questions- then we'll keep our fingers crossed! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an Wikipedia:Administrators. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the Wikipedia:administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. My main interests are in certain areas of classical music, especially lesser-known sorts which does influence what I am writing. I did get my degree such as it was in Maths and have not wholly left that field. I spent several summers during my undergrad years at math programs, one of them studying topics in Matroids, which have continued to hold some interest for me. I tried that summer, in a National Science Foundation — Research Experiences for Undergraduates program — to invent and study something which turned out to be a special case of something that already existed, but that's how the cookie crumbles. I'm also very much into a few other subjects and try to become knowledgeable about them, I may try at least to contribute to some discussions elsewhere. As of June 20 2005 I'm a Wikipedia Wikipedia:Administrators and will do what I can to be work in a manner consistent with the responsibilities of the role. If we've come into conflict about it I hope we can User talk:Schissel about it. It is neither the meaning of my life nor is it something off in the distance with no influence on it, rather the fact that this has been in my life for years, affects (not determines, again) how I see things. ===Articles written=== I have begun the following pages in basically reverse chronological order — some are stubs. Alan Walker (writer on music), Erkki Melartin, Paul Juon, List of compositions for cello and orchestra (not so much created as chopped off from Violoncello concerto), Salomon Jadassohn, String Quartet No. 2 (Borodin), Gideon Klein, Charles Koechlin, Violin Sonata No. 1 (Schumann), Matthijs Vermeulen, Symphony No. 6 (Nielsen), Cello Sonata No. 1 (Brahms), Giuseppe Martucci, Viola concerto, Giovanni Battista Sammartini, Peter Mennin, Symphony No. 5 (Bruckner), Evgeny Golubev, Violin Concerto No. 1 (Prokofiev), Violin Concerto (Walton), :Category:Schubert compositions (now moved to :Category:Compositions by Franz Schubert), String Quartet No. 15 (Schubert), :Category:Violoncello concerti, Symphony No. 5 (Schubert), Death and the Maiden Quartet, :Category:Violin sonatas, Sonata in A for Violin and Keyboard (1787) (this refers to Mozart's late work), String Quartet No. 15 (Beethoven), String Quartet, 1786 (Mozart), String Quartet No. 12 (Beethoven), Sergei Taneyev, War of the Romantics, Vagn Holmboe, Egon Joseph Wellesz, Viola sonata, Georges Onslow, Alexander Grechaninov (now merged with Alexander Gretchaninoff and redir'd to), Johann Nepomuk David, Eugen d'Albert, Violin sonata, Moisei Vainberg, Othmar Schoeck, Felix Weingartner (a bit surprised I wasn't beaten to that,) Ferdinand Ries, Anton Reicha, Violoncello concerto, Nikolai Myaskovsky, Nikolai Karlovich Medtner, Allan Pettersson. ===Articles edited=== Articles significantly edited/added-to : List of solo cello pieces, Anton Rubinstein, Musical works of Mozart, Max Reger, Violin Sonata No. 8 (Beethoven), Piano Concerto No. 1 (Mendelssohn), Music journalism, Tony Attwood, Zdenek Fibich, Florent Schmitt, Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji, Cello sonata, List of classical music composers, String quartet, Benjamin Frankel, Edmund Rubbra and Robert Fuchs, a bit to Roger Sessions.
