QuirkafleegThe quirkafleeg first came into the popular consciousness with ''Jet Set Willy'', the classic ZX Spectrum computer game (1984). It is a manoeuvre required to get past one of the screens. To "perform a quirkafleeg" quickly became a playground requirement for teenagers in the United Kingdom at the time. ''Jet Set Willy'' was more of a legend than a game, written by Matthew Smith. == Performing the Quirkafleeg == To perform a quirkafleeg you must first wait a few seconds (after entering the screen from the left), then jump the arrow that flies in from the right (pictured). Now is your chance to get over the pit in one piece, jump right as the rope is at the lowest point of its swing (right to left), and keep moving right once on the rope (this will let you climb up the rope a bit) - Don't climb too far up the rope, or you'll enter another room. Just enough to avoid the spikes at the bottom of the pit. Now jump right at the highest point of the swing. If you did this right the bird should be on the left, and should present no problem to your safe passage on to the next screen. == Etymology == After being popularized by this popular game, the origin of the joke became more widely known. In fact it was a reference to Fat Freddy's Cat of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers (issue 5 page 5). Matthew Smith, the game's author was well known for being "off the wall" - and as such, the FFFB was required reading for fans of his games. In the original FFFB comic, the quirkafleeg was an obscure ritual in a foreign country, required to be performed upon the sight of dead furry animals. == External Links == [http://www.quirkafleeg.freeserve.co.uk/Quirkafleeg.htm Why the Quirkafleeg?] A nice site explaining in more detail the history of this particular moment in gaming history.
