Quan Chi

Quan Chi is a video game character in the Mortal Kombat franchise of fighting games. == About Quan Chi == === Biography === Quan Chi is a powerful sorcerer and necromancer. His origins are unknown, although it has been suggested due to his very pale skin colour that he might be, in fact, undead. Whatever the case, Quan Chi combines both cunning and brute force in his neverending ploys to take over not just Earthrealm or any realm, but all of reality. He is an opportunist pur sang, and will ally himself with anyone who can help him further his own goals. He is marked for his ruthlessness and pragmatism. It has also been noted that the whispers of the One Being (Mortal Kombat) echo very strongly through him. === Fighting styles === In ''Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance'', Quan Chi uses the fighting styles tang soo do and escrima. His weapons are the broadsword. He is considered a mid-tier character in this game, and is also known for having one of the worst fatalities of the entire series here (he stretches the opponent's neck, causing a giraffe-like appearance). In his first playable appearance, Mortal Kombat 4, however, Quan Chi was one of the most powerful characters, thanks in large part to an extremely cheap teleport-stomp move (dropped in ''Deadly Alliance'']]. He also enjoyed what is arguably one of the best fatalities in the entire series, wherein he would rip off his opponent's leg and beat him to death with it. His other fatality only involved copying his opponent's fatality, it still could look rather interesting to see him doing the "wrong" move. == Storyline == Although technically, the first game in which Quan Chi appeared is ''Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero'', he has been a force behind the scenes for much longer. Five hundred years ago, after Goro defeated the Shaolin warrior Great Kung Lao, Shang Tsung took possession of his soul, learning the location of the amulet of Shinnok. Shang Tsung traded this information with Quan Chi. In return, Quan Chi would help to revive Sindel and enable Shao Kahn to take control of Earthrealm. Although Shao Kahn's takeover failed, it gave Quan Chi the opportunity to make his move. Before the last Mortal Kombat tournament, Quan Chi convinced Sub-Zero (Mortal Kombat character) to retrieve the amulet of Shinnok for him. The ice ninja did so, not aware of Quan Chi's motives. In the process, Sub-Zero killed Hanzo Hasashi, a Japan Shirai Ryu ninja who had also been hired for the job in the case that Sub-Zero failed. Sub-Zero was told of the deception by Rayden, and he fought his way into the Netherealm to undo his mistake. There he met Scorpion (Mortal Kombat character), the new identity of Hasashi. Sub-Zero retrieved the amulet, forcing Quan Chi to find other methods of freeing the fallen elder god. Quan Chi made a major power grab by helping Shinnok defeat Lucifer, lord of the Netherealm, and thus became arch sorcerer. When he finally gained the power of Shinnok's amulet, Quan Chi made a duplicate so that he could free Shinnok but retain the ability to destroy him. Quan Chi felt though that he would need a vengeful warrior to defeat the younger brother of the original Sub-Zero. So, Quan Chi told Scorpion that Sub-Zero had killed his family and allowed him access to the outer realms once again. As Scorpion prepared to finish Sub-Zero, Quan Chi appeared and revealed that he was the actual murderer. Enraged, Scorpion grabbed Quan Chi as he made a move to send the ninja to the Netherealm, thus trapping both of them. In the Netherealm, Quan Chi was tortured by Scorpion until the Oni (Japanese folklore) Drahmin and Moloch found them. The Oni protected Quan Chi from Scorpion, and in return, Quan Chi (unintentionally) brought them back with him when he escaped the Netherealm. Quan Chi then formed his alliance with Shang Tsung, known as the Deadly Alliance. Quan Chi would open a soulnado to the heavens, providing Tsung with infinite souls, and Tsung would help him power the army of the Dragon King. Together, Shang Tsung and Quan Chi planned absolute conquest of all realms. But first, they had to eliminate Shao Kahn and Liu Kang. Shang introduced Quan Chi to Kahn, pledging his loyalty. They then sprang their attack, killing Kahn and gaining the support of his general, Kano (Mortal Kombat character). They then headed to Earthrealm, where Quan Chi helped Shang Tsung to take Liu Kang's soul. In a desperate measure, Raiden and Earthrealm's heroes went to Outworld to face the Deadly Alliance, but all were killed. Quan Chi and Shang Tsung battled Raiden in in front of the Soulnado. They defeated Raiden, and then turned on each other. Quan Chi apparently won, but could not savour his victory: Onaga, the Dragon King, entered the chamber, and the Deadly Alliance tried to stop him. Even with Raiden aiding them, they could not stop him. Raiden released his essence in a blast that destroyed the tomb, but Onaga stood, unharmed. Quan Chi was apparently consumed in the blast. == Trivia == In the animated television series, ''Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm'', Quan Chi made an appearance in "The Secret of Quan Chi," which aired long before the Mythologies game. Quan Chi used his sorcery to turn everyone on Earth against each other, creating pandemonium and chaos that Earth's heroes were forced to overcome. Quan Chi also had a substantial guest appearance on Mortal Kombat: Conquest. Though evil for the most part, he did assist Kung Lao after an alliance with Shang Tsung went sour (an interesting prelude of things to come). Mortal Kombat characters
