Puttin' on the Ritz

"'''Puttin' on the Ritz'''" is a pop music written and published in 1929 by Irving Berlin. The title derives from the American English slang expression "Putting on the Ritz", meaning to dress very fashionably. The expression was inspired by the swanky The Ritz Hotel. The original version of Berlin's song referred to the then popular fad of well-to-do Caucasian New York City visiting African American jazz music venues in Harlem. Berlin later revised the lyrics to be more generally aplicable to going out on the town in style. Hit gramophone record of the tune in its original popularity of 1929-1930 were recorded by Harry Richman and Fred Astaire. This tune has enjoyed a number of revivals including a hit swing music version by Benny Goodman, being sung and danced to by Fred Astaire in the 1946 film Blue Skies, being memorably and humorously used in the 1974 film ''Young Frankenstein'', and returning to the hit parade again with a version by Taco Ockerse recorded in 1982. == 1930 movie == The first of many movies to feature the number was the 1930 film entitled ''Puttin' On The Ritz''. The musical film was directed by Edward Sloman and starred Harry Richman, Joan Bennett, and James Gleason. == External links == * [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0021276/ IMDB entry for the 1930 film] 1929 songs

I rather disagree with User:ShaunMacPherson's edit with the comment "people do not know/ care?/remember who origionally did it, their experience with this song is from the more recent versions". My thoughts are that since this is an encyclopedia (or aspires to be one), it is aimed at informing those who wish to find out such things. Furthermore, I don't necessarily agree that everyone will necessarily encounter first/only the "more recent" (you mean the 1982 one?) versions; they may first hear the number on some film they see on television, which could date anywhere from the 1930s to the 1970s. I tend to prefer to have information in chronological order unless there is a pressing reason not to. Cheers, -- User:Infrogmation 16:50, 23 Oct 2004 (UTC)
