Political Compass#redirect Talk:Political compass Political Compass#REDIRECT political compass Political compassA political compass or political diamond is a two dimensional political grid that seeks to label or organize political thought on two dimensions rather than the one (left versus right) that has been traditional since it was invented in France over two centuries ago; see glossary of the French Revolution. The term Political Compass was originated by a website (see Political Compass external link), which runs an on-line questionnaire which will rate your political views on two axes: ''Economic'' (Left-Right) and ''Social'' (Authoritarian-Libertarian). The site also includes an in-depth explanation of the two-axis system they use, a few charts showing the alleged positions of various past and present political figures, and reading lists for each of the main political orientations. 'Authoritarian left' is the name given to a political group who has left wing economic opinions and is in favour of strict obedience to authority (Authoritarian). The term adds an extra dimension to the traditional left-right political line; that line inadequately groups Stalin, Pol Pot and Saddam Hussein together with Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi on the grounds that they are all publicly committed to a left wing, controlled economy dedicated to the needs of their people. The next chart splits the economic concepts from a goverment-authority concent. David Nolan first introduced the idea of a political chart with 'economic freedom' along the x Cartesian axis, and 'personal freedom' along the y-axis (Nolan chart). == See also == *Political spectrum (discusses the dimensionality concept at length) *Nolan chart *Pournelle Chart ==External links== *[http://www.politicalcompass.org/ The Political Compass Organisation] *[http://www.digitalronin.f2s.com/politicalcompass/analysis2.php Explains the concept] *[http://civilities.net/CommonPoliticalGrid Discussion of the Nolan chart] Politics Political compass--- Hi, I am the anonymous coward that inserted the paragraph "Similarities and Differences with the Nolan Chart" (see history) which was removed with the arguments "all that is explained on their website [true], and, at any rate, the political compass is known by more people than the nolan chart [true]". But having a link to a (self-)explanation on the web is never a compelling reason to make a stub article. And the article on the Nolan Chart is much longer. Maybe that version was slightly ugly because the comparison part was longer than the first part. Yet I think it is better to have it. --- Removed paragraph :The Nolan chart is also unique in that it does not have an x and y axis unlinke the Nolan Chart and the Pournelle Chart. It is also rarely criticized for any political bias while the Nolan Chart is often critized as being a pure Libertarian creation. I expect this should start "The Political Compass" or something other than the Nolan cahrt - which cannot be unlike itself -- User:Chris Q 06:41, 2005 May 19 (UTC) == Where people go == I think it would help if people listed political leaders from the past or present and then people can try and point where they would go on here. What about Lenin for starters. : Authoritarian communists go in the left-upper quadrant. User:Wlievens 15:24, 27 May 2005 (UTC) Where would Karl Marx go. Paul Wilson.
