Picture tutorial

This is a tutorial on how to insert pictures in Wikipedia articles using Wikiformat. There is also a Wikipedia:Extended image syntax. If you need help uploading an image, or selecting a suitable image for an article, you should also read our wikipedia:image use policy. Note that before you add an image to an article, you should edit the Wikipedia:Image description page to explain the source of the image and make sure the Wikipedia:Copyrights of the image is clearly stated. It is preferred that you use one of the Wikipedia:Image copyright tags, as appropriate. For the purposes of this article, all examples will be done using Stevertigo's Wikipedia logo. ==Plain picture== :A plain picture with no formatting can be inserted with the statement: :The picture is the same size as the user originally uploaded. The placement in the article is arbitrary, and text does not float (wrap around) it. For example: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Duis tellus. Mauris at ipsum vitae est lacinia tincidunt. Suspendisse potenti. Sed ultricies cursus lectus. In id magna sit amet nibh suscipit euismod. Integer enim. Donec sapien ante, accumsan ut, sodales commodo, auctor quis, lacus. Maecenas a elit lacinia urna posuere sodales. Curabitur pede pede, molestie id, blandit vitae, varius ac, purus. Notice how the picture cut the text into two pieces, depending on where I put the tag. ==Specifying placement== Now, let's say we want either (a) text to float (wrap around) the picture, or (b) to specify where it gets put (left, right, inline, etc). To to this, we simply append the placement statement. ===Example 1 - Right align, float=== Mauris at ipsum vitae est lacinia tincidunt. Suspendisse potenti. Sed ultricies cursus lectus. In id magna sit amet nibh suscipit euismod. Integer enim. Donec sapien ante, accumsan ut, sodales commodo, auctor quis, lacus. Maecenas a elit lacinia urna posuere sodales. Curabitur pede pede, molestie id, blandit vitae, varius ac, purus. Morbi dictum. Vestibulum adipiscing pulvinar quam. In aliquam rhoncus sem. In mi erat, sodales eget, pretium interdum, malesuada ac, augue. Aliquam sollicitudin, massa ut vestibulum posuere, massa arcu elementum purus, eget vehicula lorem metus vel libero. Sed in dui id lectus commodo elementum. Etiam rhoncus tortor. Proin a lorem. Ut nec velit. Quisque varius. Proin nonummy justo dictum sapien tincidunt iaculis. Duis lobortis pellentesque risus. Aenean ut tortor imperdiet dolor scelerisque bibendum. Fusce metus nibh, adipiscing id, ullamcorper at, consequat a, nulla. Phasellus orci. In hac habitasse platea dictumst. Donec aliquam porta odio. Ut facilisis. Donec ornare ipsum ut massa. In tellus tellus, imperdiet ac, accumsan at, aliquam vitae, velit.
===Example 2 - Right align, float, with caption=== You'll usually put these at the start of a paragraph so the image floats to the right of the paragraph - it's common to see these at the start of an article. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Duis tellus. Mauris at ipsum vitae est lacinia tincidunt. Suspendisse potenti. Sed ultricies cursus lectus. In id magna sit amet nibh suscipit euismod. Integer enim. Donec sapien ante, accumsan ut, sodales commodo, auctor quis, lacus. Maecenas a elit lacinia urna posuere sodales. Curabitur pede pede, molestie id, blandit vitae, varius ac, purus. Morbi dictum. Vestibulum adipiscing pulvinar quam. In aliquam rhoncus sem. In mi erat, sodales eget, pretium interdum, malesuada ac, augue. Aliquam sollicitudin, massa ut vestibulum posuere, massa arcu elementum purus, eget vehicula lorem metus vel libero. Sed in dui id lectus commodo elementum. Etiam rhoncus tortor. Proin a lorem. Ut nec velit. Quisque varius. Proin nonummy justo dictum sapien tincidunt iaculis. Duis lobortis pellentesque risus. Aenean ut tortor imperdiet dolor scelerisque bibendum. Fusce metus nibh, adipiscing id, ullamcorper at, consequat a, nulla.
===Example 3 - Left align, float=== Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Duis tellus. Mauris at ipsum vitae est lacinia tincidunt. Suspendisse potenti. Sed ultricies cursus lectus. In id magna sit amet nibh suscipit euismod. Integer enim. Donec sapien ante, accumsan ut, sodales commodo, auctor quis, lacus. Maecenas a elit lacinia urna posuere sodales. Curabitur pede pede, molestie id, blandit vitae, varius ac, purus. Morbi dictum. Vestibulum adipiscing pulvinar quam. In aliquam rhoncus sem. In mi erat, sodales eget, pretium interdum, malesuada ac, augue. Aliquam sollicitudin, massa ut vestibulum posuere, massa arcu elementum purus, eget vehicula lorem metus vel libero. Sed in dui id lectus commodo elementum. Etiam rhoncus tortor. Proin a lorem. Ut nec velit. Quisque varius. Proin nonummy justo dictum sapien tincidunt iaculis. Duis lobortis pellentesque risus. Aenean ut tortor imperdiet dolor scelerisque bibendum. Fusce metus nibh, adipiscing id, ullamcorper at, consequat a, nulla. Phasellus orci. Integer velit mauris, convallis a, congue sed, placerat id, odio. Etiam venenatis tortor sed lectus. Nulla non orci. In egestas porttitor quam. Duis nec diam eget nibh mattis tempus. Curabitur accumsan pede id odio. Nunc vitae libero. Aenean condimentum diam et turpis. Vestibulum non risus.
===Example 4 - Don't float=== Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Duis tellus. Mauris at ipsum vitae est lacinia tincidunt. Sed lacinia. Suspendisse potenti. Sed ultricies cursus lectus. In id magna sit amet nibh suscipit euismod. Integer enim. Donec sapien ante, accumsan ut, sodales commodo, auctor quis, lacus. Maecenas a elit lacinia urna posuere sodales. Curabitur pede pede, molestie id, blandit vitae, varius ac, purus. ==Framing, adding a caption== It's usual to include a caption to describe the image and give credit as necessary. This means that the image will need a "frame" Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Quisque luctus. Mauris ut purus a libero semper sollicitudin. Nunc luctus hendrerit eros. Phasellus lacus. Donec non leo in sem consequat pulvinar. Curabitur ut magna vitae lectus tristique ultrices. Phasellus venenatis neque vulputate leo. Mauris quis eros. Vestibulum nonummy. Nulla facilisis sapien dignissim risus. Phasellus consequat. Integer pellentesque consectetuer lectus. Etiam malesuada eros id nibh. Fusce in tellus vitae mi auctor tincidunt. Aenean adipiscing sodales augue. Donec rutrum. Ut nisl. Duis nisl. Ut elit. Vivamus suscipit rutrum tortor. Sed id pede. Praesent eros nulla, tempor vel, faucibus sed, mattis at, lectus. Sed euismod. Curabitur et leo vitae purus accumsan posuere. Donec tempor nulla in turpis. Nam rutrum. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Nullam vel turpis vel risus fermentum posuere. In porta augue quis dui. In tincidunt rhoncus urna. Integer in lorem. Ut in lectus ac arcu pretium rutrum. Phasellus imperdiet pede ut arcu. Sed ac massa. Donec id leo.
==Resizing== Let's say that picture is too big. Let's say we want the user to get a smaller version (a "thumbnail") when he/she looks at the article. Thumbnails always include a frame, so when thumbnailing, you almost always want to specify a caption. Wikiformat supports auto-resizing; that is, our contributors upload a picture of one size, and that picture gets automatically resized when a viewer looks at an article. For example, let's say we want it to be 100 pixels wide: In typical graphical browsers, this image shows no hint when the user moves the mouse over the image; in text browsers, something like '100px-Wikipedesketch1.png' might appear instead of the image, or nothing at all, depending on settings. We should be able to improve on this by specifying Wikipedia:Alternative text for images, as follows: Let's say we want it 500 pixels wide: As you can see, the image is not scaled to 500 pixels. The wiki software limits the size of unframed images to that of the original. In other words, you can't enlarge pictures unless they are in a frame, which is what we will get to next. ==Thumbnailing== A thumbnail frames a picture. It puts a gray border around a picture. This is a good way of letting a user know that a bigger version is available. It also lets you put a caption on the picture. (See Wikipedia:Captions for caption writing tips.) Quisque luctus. Mauris ut purus a libero semper sollicitudin. Nunc luctus hendrerit eros. Phasellus lacus. Donec non leo in sem consequat pulvinar. Curabitur ut magna vitae lectus tristique ultrices. Phasellus venenatis neque vulputate leo. Mauris quis eros. Vestibulum nonummy. Nulla facilisis sapien dignissim risus. Phasellus consequat. Integer pellentesque consectetuer lectus. Etiam malesuada eros id nibh. Fusce in tellus vitae mi auctor tincidunt. Nulla vitae metus.
==Combining different options== Ok, all this so far as has been cool, but it's not really useful unless you combine it all. Let's say we have a picture that we want floating, right aligned, thumbnailed, resized to 100 pixels, and with a caption. You can combine all of the above. Order does not matter, except that the picture name must come first and the caption must come last: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Duis dapibus dictum purus. Cras nibh. Vivamus ante nunc, ultricies ut, fermentum at, luctus ac, felis. Suspendisse ac diam. Suspendisse lacinia congue mauris. Vestibulum ante ipsum primis in faucibus orci luctus et ultrices posuere cubilia Curae; Nulla facilisi. Donec varius egestas tortor. Curabitur pretium malesuada dui. Vestibulum ante ipsum primis in faucibus orci luctus et ultrices posuere cubilia Curae; Curabitur et urna. Cras lacus. Donec risus. Proin ornare eros ac nibh. In venenatis erat sit amet mauris. Morbi sem felis, tempus eget, aliquam id, imperdiet id, elit. Vestibulum turpis. Suspendisse elementum. Mauris arcu magna, ultrices a, tristique facilisis, facilisis id, massa. Quisque in arcu. Praesent auctor mauris sit amet leo. Proin facilisis viverra tellus. Morbi at purus. Nam dictum. Quisque in urna. Donec rutrum.
==Avoiding image "stackups"== One of the problems many users of floating images hit is that multiple images sometimes "stack up" horizontally, particularly with large screens and wide images. The ''best'' solution to this is simply to add more text, but this sometimes isn't possible. This section shows some solutions to this problem.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Donec in enim. Aliquam erat volutpat. Maecenas id nibh ut turpis lobortis commodo. Phasellus sed neque. Proin fringilla euismod libero. Etiam vel lectus. Aliquam dui. Curabitur venenatis molestie neque. Integer mi dolor, gravida at, accumsan eget, fringilla eget, arcu. Suspendisse euismod. Nam et lorem accumsan magna venenatis pellentesque. In et ante. Etiam magna. Cras rutrum mi quis tellus. Nunc tristique risus pulvinar ante. Vivamus varius.

=== Co-aligning like images=== It's very common to have two very similar images that logically should be grouped together. To achieve this, it's currently necessary to use some html markup:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Sed tellus neque, bibendum ac, accumsan eget, vestibulum a, nibh. Sed viverra urna non massa. Etiam vehicula ligula vitae nibh. Phasellus tempus auctor wisi. In consequat. Cras vel neque. Donec leo dolor, lobortis luctus, volutpat vitae, vestibulum in, eros. Maecenas porttitor, erat ullamcorper tempus faucibus, odio arcu venenatis nisl, ut cursus odio felis sed urna. Nullam ut elit vel est eleifend egestas. Ut dictum orci eu mi. Cras ultricies. Nulla facilisi. Aenean nonummy. In metus. Sed malesuada vestibulum purus. Phasellus at odio. Integer in massa vitae quam euismod viverra. Integer nulla orci, ornare non, consequat non, mollis ornare, nunc. Vestibulum ante ipsum primis in faucibus orci luctus et ultrices posuere cubilia Curae; Aliquam id sapien ut sapien fermentum pretium. Cras mattis. Nam rhoncus. Vivamus mattis tellus elementum magna semper ullamcorper.
It is also often useful to horizontally align two images: {| |- | || |} However, this should be used sparingly, as it can cause the images to protrude off the right of the page for people with narrow browser windows. This is done using Wikipedia:How to use tables:
{|
|-
|  ||
|}
An alternative, that avoids being too wide, is to align both left and rely on them to stack up:

It will be necessary to include the

in order to prevent following text from being placed alongside the images. ===Alternating left and right floats=== Perhaps the easiest way is to make floating images alternate left then right - this way they don't come into contact with one another, and so can't stack up in an unattractive way. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Donec in enim. Aliquam erat volutpat. Maecenas id nibh ut turpis lobortis commodo. Phasellus sed neque. Proin fringilla euismod libero. Etiam vel lectus. Aliquam dui. Curabitur venenatis molestie neque. Integer mi dolor, gravida at, accumsan eget, fringilla eget, arcu. Suspendisse euismod. Nam et lorem accumsan magna venenatis pellentesque. In et ante. Etiam magna. Cras rutrum mi quis tellus. Nunc tristique risus pulvinar ante. Vivamus varius. Duis accumsan tincidunt sapien. Morbi sed velit. Etiam quis orci. Donec at velit sed lorem elementum feugiat. Curabitur ut ligula. Quisque in eros. Morbi sed enim id sapien tristique fringilla. Nunc ligula augue, pellentesque ac, nonummy id, semper eget, ante.
===Forcing a break=== As a final resort, you can force the browser to insert a break, making all text and images appear below the bottom of the first image. This can produce rather unattractive gaps, particularly in the accompanying text. Remember that text will flow and wrap differently for other users, based on their chosen browser, screen resolution, default font size, accessibility options, number of toolbars and sidebars (such as instant messaging panes) and more -- don't force page design just so that it looks pretty on ''your'' machine. Hack only where absolutely necessary. Wherever possible, just use the simplest logical page flow.

=== Photo gallery === ====Wiki markup and CSS==== To display a series of photos in a gallery, there is a simple method using wiki markup and Cascading Style Sheets: Float all images in the gallery to the left, and clear their left float at the end to avoid having the images run into following content.

Advantages: Adapts to screen width by wrapping, simple markup.
====New MediaWiki '''' tag==== The new MediaWiki software has support for a '''' tag, which vastly simplifies making image galleries in pages:

Image:Wikipedesketch1.png|The Wikipedia logo
Image:Wikipedesketch1.png|A Wikipedia logo
Image:Wikipedesketch1.png|Wikipedia logo

Image:Wikipedesketch1.png|One logo for Wikipedia
Image:Wikipedesketch1.png|Wikipedia has logo
Image:Wikipedesketch1.png|The logo of Wikipedia

Advantages: Really simple markup. Probably will get more support as MediaWiki matures (hopefully?), no wasted space between images Disadvantages: Does not adapt to screen width by wrapping, can't specify image size (hopefully both will be fixed in the next version). Image:Wikipedesketch1.png|The Wikipedia logo Image:Wikipedesketch1.png|A Wikipedia logo Image:Wikipedesketch1.png|Wikipedia logo Image:Wikipedesketch1.png|Wikipedia's logo Image:Wikipedesketch1.png|A logo for Wikipedia Image:Wikipedesketch1.png|One logo for Wikipedia Image:Wikipedesketch1.png|Wikipedia has logo Image:Wikipedesketch1.png|The logo of Wikipedia ====Templates==== Another method which may become possible in the future makes use of the Template:Gallery. Its syntax is: : : The following alternative syntax allows image widths to be specified (as ###px). This may be merged with if [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Extended_template_syntax#Inserting_multiple_elements:_the_.22for_each.22_construct conditional parameters] are implemented. : : Advantages: Adapts to screen width with wrapping, simpler markup, no HTML, no visible CSS. Disadvantages: Puts scroll bars and other nasties in some browsers. Can't specify image size. ==Linking to pictures without displaying them== Let's say you want to link to the picture without displaying it. There are two ways to do it. :Media:Wikipedesketch1.png Media:Wikipedesketch1.png Notice that it says "media" instead of "image". When the user clicks on the link, the browser goes directly to the image. Also, notice that you can change the text so it says anything you want. Media:Wikipedesketch1.png Media:Wikipedesketch1.png Now let's say that instead of taking the viewer directly to the picture, you want to take them to the image page (where it tells them who uploaded it, when, what the copyright status is, etc). You can do that with: :Image:Wikipedesketch1.png :Image:Wikipedesketch1.png The only difference between this picture and the very first picture in this tutorial is that I put a colon before "image". As above, I can make the link say anything I want. ==Pages== Should this article be split into a multi-page tutorial as the Wikipedia:Tutorial is now? --User:Rj 07:17, Apr 2, 2004 (UTC) :(As the one who wrote the majority of this) No! It's not nearly long enough to merit a breakup, and that would only serve to create (yet more) documentation pages. There's already far, far too many of those as it is. Keep it as it is. If it gets *significantly* larger, than we can reconsider this. Furthermore, most of the later examples depend on earlier ones, in which case, I want them kept as closely together as possible. User:Raul654 07:20, Apr 2, 2004 (UTC) ==Styles== I've added a section on avoiding stackup problems. I use a slightly different style to Raul's, one I think makes the article clearer. I'm using html PRE tags for example wikitext, and specifying an explicit (different) font for the example text (as I think it's hard to differentiate between the article's own didactic text and the that of the examples). Naturally the article should feature only one of the two ways of doing things, and I'm not especially attached to mine. It's just another case of Wikifying things. :: Is it a good idea not to specify a width for images (unless there's a good reason for doing so in a particular case, of course). If no width is given the thumbnails default to 250 pixels wide which is the recommended size anyway. If that recommendation changes in future, the default could be altered and all ''un''specified images would change to the new standard without the need to edit each one. What do others think? - User:Chrisjj 17:33, 18 Jun 2004 (UTC) ::: If this is the case, I was not aware of it, and I'll go back to the images I've created and remove the width specifications. This is, as you say, a good idea, for the reason you mentioned. - User:RealGrouchy 13:00, 20 Jun 2004 (UTC) == Picture tutorial torture == Here is the Deal: I am struggling with posting pictures, which I realize is my problem, and not yours. HOWEVER, I just printed off the 11 page Tutorial and it went fine until I tried to use it. That’s when I discovered that ALL the codes, tucked neatly into little boxes, did not print. All I got was the outline of the box. This does not seem right. User:Carptrash 19:15, 3 Aug 2004 (UTC) carptrash == Pictures or images? == It might be better to be consistent and call them "images". This makes it easier for new users looking for other tips on images, which are in articles with names containing "image" not "picture". User:Gracefool |User talk:gracefool 00:36, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC) == Image maps == Is it possible to add image maps (ie where you can add linked areas of an image?) :No. User:Raul654 18:14, Mar 5, 2005 (UTC) == Misleading tags == Not being a very experienced Wikipedia user, I believe some tags are different than stated in the surrounding text. For example, in the paragraph where tag is stated, in fact is used. Am I right? User:Matevzk 22:37, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC) ==Commons== How should this page be updated to reflect Wikimedia Commons ([http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page])? User:Hyacinth 04:07, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC) :(If needed at all, this single sentence should suffice:) ''Images on commons are automatically available to all projects, and can be treated exactly the same as images on this wikipedia'' User:Raul654 04:21, Apr 3, 2005 (UTC) What about Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons? Should we encourage users to upload to the commons in the first place? User:Hyacinth 08:36, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC) == Odd picture flowing == In editing CADPAT, I spent some time trying to align two pictures next to each other. In the end, I used a table. Originally, the images were just included with plain ; having two such tags in a row meant you had two picturs next to one another. I tried to convert to frames, but couldn't find a setting that led to similar behaviour - with they were not displayed next to each other. Why is this? In the end I used tables, so I'll Wikipedia:Be bold and just go ahead and put that in. --User:Aarchiba 03:31, Apr 20, 2005 (UTC) I made this too. :D -User:Stevertigo|User_talk:Stevertigo 23:52, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC) Ps Needs something on his shirt though. Maybe "Pickyweedia" ==Pablo's edits and me reverting Yath== Recently, Pablo converted this page from the all-work-and-no-play-makes-jack-a-dull-boy text that I used when writing this page over to Loren Ipsum, which (after doing a quick google search on the phrase) I found out is basically the industry standard for typsetting. I would have used it myself if I knew what it was when I wrote this page. Also, Pablo added different captions for each of the galleried pics, which was a definite improvement. Yath reverted these edits as unhelpful, but I disagree and I reverted back. User:Raul654 09:19, May 26, 2005 (UTC) :Sticking to the lorem ipsum text because of a perceived industry standard is pointless. The question is whether the page is made more usable and helpful to its readers by the use of it. You may argue that using text from a dead language is less likely to be distracting, but in my opinion it just makes the page as dull as dirt. --User:Yath 10:05, 26 May 2005 (UTC) ::Well, umm, I don't really think "All work and no play makes jack a dull boy" repeated 10,000 times is going to make this article one iota more exciting. User:Raul654 06:49, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC) ==Inacuracies in tutorial?== I recently used this tutorial to add my first wikipedia image to the article renewal theory. However the suggested form made no difference to the size of the image. I was only able to successfully specify the size of images with help from another wikipedian who suggested combining the size attribute with the thumb attribute as follows: .] Is the tutorial inaccurate, or were my problems a special case? Thanks, User:Reetep 14:43, 31 May 2005 (UTC) :Resizing a picture to larger-than-it-actually-is no longer works as of mediawiki 1.4 (at the very least, it no longer works as I documented here). I just haven't had time to update. User:Raul654 15:04, May 31, 2005 (UTC) ::I was trying to reduce the size of the image. Any ideas why it didn't work? Thanks, User:Reetep 16:17, 31 May 2005 (UTC) :::The tutorial does it, and it works fine. No offense, but I think you were doing something wrong. User:Raul654 06:53, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC) ::::No offense taken - I very likely was doing something wrong; I'm just interested to know what it was. I'd like to understand what was wrong and from there to determine whether :::::# I was stupid in my interpretation of the tutorial :::::# the tutorial was inaccurate :::::# the tutorial was accurate but lacking in info/ misleading etc ::::If the tutorial can be improved for the benefit of future newbies like me, then that can only be good. Would you mind looking at [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Renewal_theory&diff=14462189&oldid=14457752 how the problem was fixed] by the user RI to see what it was that I was doing wrong? The only potential problem that I can see is that I was using 'frame' in combination with the size attribute. Would that necessarily cause trouble? User:Reetep 12:24, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC) Oh, that's easy! (It took me about 3 seconds to notice the problem). The frame tag *forces* the picture to stay at its original size. In other words, it overrides the size indicator. Let's say you have a picture called blah.jpg and it is 1000px x 1000px. blah.jpg|frame|300px|caption <-- the picture would show up at 1000x, because the frame tag forces it to be its original size, even if you tell it what size to make it. If you want to resize a picture and have a caption, you *must* use the thumb (or thumbnail) switch, and you *must not* use frame. User:Raul654 12:48, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC) : Thanks very much for your help, that's great.
