I've decided to use this page for links, as that seems the most valuable use for my user page. If you want to see a pretty, but mostly non-useful user page, I have one on [http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Pedant the simple English wikpedia] and if you want to leave me a note, en:User talk:Pedant User:Pedant/Books :Category:Wikipedia_category_redirects Wikipedia talk:Forum for Encyclopedic Standards Wikipedia:Votes for deletion [http://www.bloglines.com/public/inactivewikipedias inactive wikipedias - recent changes] [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Inactive_wikis inactive WPs project page] [http://kohl.wikimedia.org/kates-tools/index.action kate's tools] [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Nickj/Redirects Needed redirects] [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Soft_redirect soft redirects] Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax Wikipedia:As of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrator%27s_noticeboard AN] == NASA collection == [http://wikisource.org/wiki/NASA_FACTS NASA FACTS on Wikisource] and [http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:NASA_FACTS on the Commons] In case you have questions about why this is on the commons and on wikisource, the answer is that the collection on the commons, is a collection of scanned documents and images, while the collection on wikisource is, or will be, articles duplicating the information on the images, but in text form, so as to be electronically accessible and copy/pastable. The collection on the commons may periodically have more content than on wikisource, but only for a short while, until the content is OCR'd. Content that is in transition, not fully optically character recognized, will be available on wikisource as links to images rather than text. If anyone is interested, I could use help with converting the images to text... please ask me and I'll point you at some articles I haven't worked on yet. Pedant

A Pedant is a person who overrates or overuses book learning or pure technical knowledge. Such a person values simple knowledge, (in the form of often obscure facts and rules) over common sense and more general knowledge. Some pedants are ostentatious in their pedantry, as if displaying their knowledge, and pointing out the errors of others, gives them great pleasure. Such pedants would be more likely to expound at length on subjects, taking every opportunity to demonstrate the breadth of their knowledge. Some pedants are simply nit-pickers, people who are annoyed by what they see as egregious errors. They take no pleasure in correcting your mistakes, yet they cannot let such mistakes go uncorrected. Such pedants will correct your pronunciation in conversation, and the bolder (or less socially adept) pedant might even correct your use of grammar while you converse with another person. The on-line community has spawned a whole new breed of pedants, allowing free platform for ostentatious pedants to hold forth, and ample opportunity for the nit-pickers to comb for trivial errors that seek correction. Being called a pedant, or pedantic, is considered insulting. People who wish to make a correction often prefect it with "not wishing to be pedantic, but ..." or "without being a pedant, ..." in order to indicate that the correction is made in good spirit and implies no criticism. Pedantry can come about as the overzealous application of intellectual rigour, but equally can just be an annoying habit brought on by lack of social interaction. Pedantry can also be an indication of certain mental disorders. In particular those suffering from Asperger Syndrome, or Higher Functioning Autism, often have behavior characterized by pedantic speech [http://www.aspennj.org/guide.html]. Those with Asperger tend to obsess over the minutia of subjects, and are prone to giving long detailed expositions, and the related corrections. Obsessive-compulsive_personality_disorder is also in part characterized by a form of pedantry that is overly concerned with the correct following of rules, procedures and practices.[http://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/page.cfm?pagecode=PMAMAY] Sometimes the rules that OCPD sufferers obsessively follow are of their own devising, or are corruptions or re-interpretations of the letter of actual rules. ===Quotes=== *"A Man who has been brought up among Books, and is able to talk of nothing else, is what we call a Pedant. But, methinks, we should enlarge the Title, and give it to every one that does not know how to think out of his Profession and particular way of Life." - Addison, Spectator 1711. [http://tabula.rutgers.edu/spectator/text/june1711/no105.html] *"Nothing is as peevish and pedantic as men's judgments of one another." - Desiderius Erasmus [http://jmm.aaa.net.au/articles/13076.htm]

I agree with User:Katherine Shaw (What's point in having a page that says "There is no article"?). This is why I have restarted this article in the form of a stub. Could we give it some time to develop into a longer article? For example, are there any "famous" pedants among artists etc.? Or could we deal with the topic from a psychological point of view? (You see, I'm thinking of things that go far beyond the limits of Wiktionary.) Any suggestions? User:KF 11:10, Nov 27, 2004 (UTC)

I'm asking all members to verify at least three facts in the article, and I'd really appreciate it if you could try and help with this. We have about 19 members, so if even 3/4 of us try and fulfil this 'dream', that'll be 45 references! If you need some information on how to use footnotes, take a look at Wikipedia:Footnote3, which has a method of autonumbering footnotes. Unfortunately, they produce brackets around the footnotes, but it seems to be our best alternative until they integrate the [http://bugzilla.wikipedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=192 footnote feature request code] into MediaWiki. You may be interested in voting for the aforementioned feature request. Cheers, User:Frazzydee|User talk:Frazzydee 20:03, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC) Hi, I noticed you are a successful editor for the "9/11 domestic conspiracy theory" page. I have a page that is being voted on for deletion. My page has links that may be useful to your article. However, I am not a successful editor. The users who are voting for deletion of my page are also reverting all minor edits or inserts that I make to other pages, in a tag-team fashion. Therefore I cannot try to edit the above mentioned article that you edit. If you want more links to support your article, you are in a position to harvest them from my article prior to its deletion. My article is called "9/11 open questions". Best of success with your article. You asked to not have the toss juggling article merged with the juggling article, do you still feel that way? User:MattKingston 01:55, 2 May 2005 (UTC) :Yes. The Juggling article should eventually include examples of all types of juggling and juggling related arts, butToss juggling is a specific subset that, it seems to me, will tend to overwhelm the Juggling article and overshadow all of the many other types of juggling. :Juggling in my opinion should be used as a hub article to facilitate access to ALL of the Juggling Arts, since 'juggling' is obviously the most likely place for someone to start looking for info on juggling arts. :I feel that the fact that, as you pointed out "the juggling article is about 10 larger than the toss juggling article and almost exclusively on toss juggling" can best be remedied by adding information on juggling in general or on specific 'other forms besides Toss' juggling. Obviously you have an interest in the Juggling constellation, what is your opinion(s) regarding the article? Are you a juggler? Or is there a different reason you are interested? What direction would you like to take the 'juggling constellation'? I am interested any ideas or suggestions you have. You can answer here or on your page, I'll see it either way. Feel free to copy our discussion to any relevant discuss pages if appropriateUser:Pedant 22:06, 2005 May 5 (UTC) ::My opinion is that it is fine to have an article for general juggling and a seperate one for toss juggling, though I don't know anything about other forms of juggling, so I wont be the one adding the information. As it stands now, we have two articles on toss juggling, and that creates a situation where people will be adding information to both articles that will later have to be merged. I am a bad amateur juggler, and I've been contributing to the siteswap article. I'm not so interested in the 'juggling constellation' but the odd thing (like siteswap) catches my interest and I contribute if I think I can. I don't particularly have any suggestion, I just thought that I'd point the situation out because maybe you forgot about the two juggling and hadn't noticed that most toss juggling information was being added to the juggling page.
