Pathogen

A pathogen (literally "birth of pain" from the Greek language ''παθογένεια'') is a biological agent that can cause disease to its Host (biology). A synonym of pathogen is "infectious agent". The term "pathogen" is most often used for agents that disrupt the normal physiology of a Multicellular organism animal or plant. However, pathogens can infect unicellular organisms from all of the Kingdom_(biology) (see Pathogen#Viruses, below). == Overview == The human body has many natural defenses against some of the more common pathogens (such as ''Pneumocystis'',) in the form of the human immune system and by some "helpful" bacteria present in the human body's normal flora. However, if the immune system or "good" bacteria is damaged in any way (such as by chemotherapy or HIV, or by antibiotics being taken to kill other pathogens) pathogenic bacteria that was being held at bay can proliferate and cause harm to the host. Such cases are called opportunistic infections. Today, while many medical advances have been made to safeguard against infection by pathogens, through the use of vaccination, antibiotics and fungicide, pathogens continue to threaten human life. == Threat of pathogens == Some pathogens (such as ''Yersinia pestis'', which may have caused the Black Plague, and the ''Variola'' virus) have been found responsible for massive amounts of casualties and have had numerous effects on afflicted groups. Of particular note in modern times is HIV, which is known to have infected several million humans globally, as well as the recently emerged Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS. == Notable pathogens == Below is a listing of different types of notable pathogens as categorized by their structural characteristics, and some of their known effects on infected hosts. === bacterium === * ''Escherichia coli'' (Food poisoning) * ''Mycobacterium tuberculosis'' (Tuberculosis) * ''Salmonella'' (Food poisoning) * ''Staphylococcus aureus'' (Toxic shock syndrome) * ''Streptococcus pneumoniae'' (Pneumonia) * ''Streptococcus pyogenes'' (Strep throat) === virus === * ''Hepatitis Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Hepatitis D and Hepatitis E'' (Liver disease/failure) * ''Herpes simplex virus'' (Contagious herpes rash) * ''Human Immunodeficiency Virus/HIV'' (AIDS) * ''Molluscum contagiosum'' (Rash-like skin growths) * ''Papillomavirus'' (Warts - some varieties cause cervical cancer) * ''Coronavirus'' (One variety causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) === Protozoa === * ''Cryptosporidium'' * ''Giardia lamblia'' * ''Plasmodium falciparum'' * ''Trypanosoma cruzi'' === Fungi === * ''Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia/Pneumocystis jerovici'' (Opportunistic pneumonia) === Parasites === * Roundworms * Scabies * Tapeworms == See also == * Foodborne illness * Epidemiology * Microbiology * Vaccination

Pathogen

Neisseria menigitidis? I'm having trouble believing meningitus has never reached the radar on the 'pedia... : It's ''Neisseria meningitidis''. There is an article on meningitis, just none specifically on that species of organism. User:Someone else 22:48 Oct 23, 2002 (UTC) ::wow thanks! I'll have to ck my dictionary! I searched a bit looking for that one!--dgd ---- Why is ''Thiomargarita namibiensis'' listed as a pathogen? What disease does it cause? -- User:Someone else 22:59 Oct 23, 2002 (UTC) :woops. it's gone ---- I'll have this page on my to do list, unless someone lists the mechanics pathogens use to cause disease before me :) -User:MacGyverMagic 15:03, Apr 18, 2004 (UTC) ---- The page was listed on "pages needing attention", and User:Heidimo also asked me to take a glance at it. IMHO, most material is redundant and could be merged with list of infectious diseases (just add the names of the pathogens to the diseases they cause). Just a list of all known pathogens is a silly endeavour. Any opinions? User:Jfdwolff
User:Jfdwolff | User_talk:Jfdwolff 11:46, 5 May 2004 (UTC) :may be useful for those just wanting the term defined. I think it is now quite good for most purposes.--User:Inkypaws 14:24, 7 Jul 2004 (UTC)
