Parma is a village located in Jackson County, Michigan, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 907. == History == Parma's original name was Cracker Hill. You can still mail things to the post office with the name Cracker Hill and it will arrive. == Geography == According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.5 square kilometre (0.6 square mile). 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. == Demographics == As of the censusGeographic references#2 of 2000, there are 907 people, 310 households, and 233 families residing in the village. The population density is 593.6/km² (1,541.2/mi²). There are 317 housing units at an average density of 207.4/km² (538.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.14% White (U.S. Census), 0.55% African American (U.S. Census), 0.88% Native American (U.S. Census), 0.55% Asian (U.S. Census), 0.66% from Race (U.S. Census), and 1.21% from two or more races. 1.65% of the population are Hispanic (U.S. Census) or Latino (U.S. Census) of any race. There are 310 households out of which 43.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.7% are Marriage living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.8% are non-families. 21.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.86 and the average family size is 3.32. In the village the population is spread out with 33.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 104.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.3 males. The median income for a household in the village is $39,531, and the median income for a family is $46,429. Males have a median income of $31,307 versus $24,432 for females. The per capita income for the village is $16,483. 3.3% of the population and 1.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.0% of those under the age of 18 and 9.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. == Culture and community == Parma has two United Methodist churches: The North Parma United Methodist Church and the Parma United Methodist Church. North Parma serves the farming congregation north of town and the "Plain Parma" church serves the village congregation. North Parma is a white clapboard country church and "Plain Parma" is an orange brick church. Both churches are served by the same minister and are sort of considered one big congregation. Other country churches in the community are Calvary Apostolic Church, Howe Wesleyan Church (www.wesleyan.org), Parma Baptist Church. ------- South is the town of Spring Arbor. North is the town of Springport. East is the city and county seat of Jackson, Michigan.
