Pacific Islands

The Pacific Ocean has an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 islands; the exact number is unknown. These islands are also sometimes collectively called ''Oceania'', and are traditionally grouped into three: (1) Melanesia, (2) Micronesia, and (3) Polynesia. Melanesia means ''black islands''. These include New Guinea (the largest Pacific island, which is divided into the nation of Papua New Guinea and the Indonesian province of Irian Jaya), New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands. Micronesia means ''small islands''. These include the Marianas, Guam, Palau, the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru, and the Federated States of Micronesia. Polynesia means ''many islands''. These include New Zealand, the Hawaiian Islands, the Midway Atoll, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, the Cook Islands, French Polynesia, and Easter Island. There are also many other islands located within the boundaries of the Pacific Ocean, but these are not considered part of Oceania. These islands include the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador; the Aleutian Islands in Alaska; the Russian islands of Sakhalin and Kuril Islands; the island nation of Japan, which includes the Ryukyu Islands; Republic of China; the Philippines; the South China Sea Islands; and most of the islands of Indonesia. The Pacific Islands’ Geography: • About 25,000 islands dot the Pacific Ocean. • The region is divided into three areas; Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. • The region’s islands are also classified in two groups; high islands and low islands. • Volcanoes form high islands. • High islands support more people and have a more fertile soil. • Low islands are reef or atolls. • Low islands are built on coral reefs. • Low islands are quite small. • Melanesia is the most populated island region. • Most of Melanesia’s large islands are high islands. • Most of the islands of Micronesia lie north of the equator. • Polynesia is the largest island region in the Pacific Ocean. • The Pacific Island region has few natural resources. ==List of Islands==

==Addition of Australia== What are you doing Cantus? Australia is not a pacific island and link to the List of countries was part of the original template. --User:JiangUser talk:Jiang 05:08, 30 May 2004 (UTC) :You said it yourself, Australia is not part of the Pacific Islands. Oceania is synonymous with the Pacific Islands in the narrow sense, acccording to the Oceania article. Australia is its own continent. This is made clear in Template:Continent. See: :: :Australia is listed as a continent, with a note about the Pacific Islands aka Oceania not being part of any continent. It makes no sense to add Australia to them. :Also, no continent MediaWiki has 'Countries of the World' in the title. If you are ignorant about the issue, don't edit at all. Thanks. And ''please'' don't turn this into a revert war or protect it for your advantage. :--User:Cantus 05:23, 30 May 2004 (UTC) The wider sense of Oceania includes Australia. I see no reason to limit Oceania to the "narrow sense." User:John Kenney User_talk:John Kenney 05:38, 30 May 2004 (UTC) :See my reasons above. Try to side with me ONCE in your LIFETIME. --User:Cantus 05:40, 30 May 2004 (UTC) ::1) most of your reasons above are based on citing evidence from articles that ''you wrote''. This is entirely dubious. As to siding with you once in my lifetime, I'm perfectly willing to side with you if I think you're right. IMHO, your edits to these kind of articles are essentially trolling, and I'm not going to have any truck with them. At any rate, I expected the remainder of my lifetime to be quite a while, so I see little chance that I will miss my sole chance to agree with you. Best. User:John Kenney User_talk:John Kenney 05:46, 30 May 2004 (UTC) Someone removed the link to "List of countries" that was in the original page break in the original template. You have choice - either to allow these links to stay in these footers, are have all footers removed to adhere to the template. "List of countries" must be linked somewhere in each country article. You please tell me where. We should link the continents footer in the australia article. However, it does not include the other countries in the region. Since australia is both, we should include both the continents and oceania footer. It's not wrong to include Australia in Oceania. It's commonly does so. --User:JiangUser talk:Jiang 05:42, 30 May 2004 (UTC) :It sounds strange to put 'Countries of the World' and then 'Africa' as if Africa was a country of the world. It should be: ::Continents of the World | Africa | Countries (linking to Countries of the world) :Regarding the addition of Australia to Pacific Islands, we should make another MediaWiki called Oceania, and include Australia in that one, and use it only for Australia. :--User:Cantus 05:52, 30 May 2004 (UTC) ::If the mediawiki is used only in one place, it's not necessary to create one. What's wrong with putting the OCeania one at the PAcific Islands? The name of the MW doesn't really matter so modifying this one is enough. ::If you find the format strange, the take issue at the wikiproject. That's how it had been done for over a year before you showed up. Your "compromise" does not include the link like I asked. Please include the link or be reverted. --User:JiangUser talk:Jiang 06:05, 30 May 2004 (UTC)
