OS/400

OS/400 is an operating system used on IBM's line of AS/400 (now called iSeries) minicomputers. OS/400 and AS/400 were introduced in 1988. The latest version of OS/400 is now called i5/OS. OS/400 and i5/OS have built-in subsystems that provide some backward compatibility with earlier IBM general business systems, such as the IBM System/3x series. IBM designs i5/OS as a "turnkey" operating system, requiring little or no on-site attention from IT staff during normal operation. For example, i5/OS has a built-in (and quite powerful) DB2 database which does not require separate installation and maintenance. System administration has been wizard (software)-driven for years, even before that term was defined. i5/OS is also well regarded for its tuned Java programming language implementation, including specific hardware optimizations. i5/OS can coexist on modern iSeries and pSeries hardware alongside AIX operating system and Linux. == External links == * [http://www.ibm.com/eserver/iseries iSeries] (IBM) * [http://www.midrange.com/ ''midrange.com -- i5 / iSeries / AS400 technical discussion mailing lists and more''] Operating systems AS/400

OS/400

I believe this OS is currently called i5/OS , this page's title should be changed, appropriate links / references to it should be updated, etc etc etc [http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS/400 The Italian version of this page] mentions the new name as well. That's correct, the last version titled OS/400 is arguably V5R2 or [http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v5r3/ic2924/index.htm V5R3]. Different sources, even those on IBM's site, will refer to V5R3 as both i5/OS and OS/400. It is fairly likely that future releases will strip out most mention of OS/400, following IBM's new naming scheme. However, for historical reasons it is probably still accurate to title the article OS/400, just as the AS/400 article is still titled as such despite its rename to iSeries. Most long-time users of the AS/400 still refer to the system as "AS/400" and the OS as "OS/400" or will at least recognize these titles. -- User:Uberpenguin 14:03, 2004 Nov 18 (UTC) How about a blurb on "SSP" (System Service Program), the OS for the S/32, S/34 and S/36 minis as well as "CPF" (Control Program Facility) for the S/38? Project "Silverlake" was IBM's effort to merge the two OSes into what is now known as "OS/400"
