These are abbreviated as C, G, A, T, and U, respectively. Uracil replaces thymine in RNA. These two bases are identical except that uracil lacks the 5' methyl group. Adenine and guanine belong to the double-ringed class of molecules called purines (abbreviated as R). Cytosine, thymine, and uracil are all pyrimidines (abbreviated as Y). A nucleobase covalently bound to the 1' carbon of a ribose or deoxyribose is called a ''nucleoside'', and a nucleoside with one or more phosphate groups attached at the 5' carbon is called a ''nucleotide''. == See also == * Nucleoside * Nucleotide * DNA * RNA DNA RNA

I believe the image has an error. Both DNA strands in the image go into the same direction, whereas in reality one of the strands should go into the opposite position. User:Wilke 17:29, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC) :Replaced image with corrected one. User:Wilke 17:50, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC) ::Actually, the current figure has at least three, maybe four errors. 1. The alleged T is missing the methyl group at the 5-position, so it's actually a U. 2. The C should have a double bond between the 5- and 6-carbons. 3. The G should have only a single bond between the 1-nitrogen and the 6-carbon (note the carbon that forms five bonds). 4. It's ambiguous, but in some cases at least it looks like the "5" is labelling the 4' rather than the 5' carbon. User:Josh Cherry 00:04, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)
