Microkernel#REDIRECT Kernel (computer science) MicrokernelIs this quote true? ''"However, the amount of effort in maintaining any kernel code is sufficiently high that the improvements in maintainablity generated by a microkernel architecture are marginal."'' It seems to me that maintainability trades off with performance. Maintainability does not trade with the microkernel design, unless you're trying to pretzel the code into giving unnaturally good performance. That quote seems a little NPOV, especially considering I run an OS using the Mach microkernel -- Apple Darwin. While I know Darwin is not pure microkernel (other parts of the kernel share address space with Mach), it does not seem to have an adverse effect on kernel maintainability.
