Michigan State Highway 78

Michigan State Highway 78 or M-78 is a state highway in Michigan. The western terminus is the intersection with Michigan State Highway 66 north of Battle Creek, Michigan. The eastern terminus is the intersection with Interstate 69 near Olivet, Michigan. Total length 11 miles. M-78 lies within Calhoun County, Michigan and Eaton County, Michigan. It briefly crosses the southwest corner of Barry County, Michigan. One time, M-78 had a segment of freeway that started at its present-day eastern terminus to Flint. Then, at some time, I-69 was designated onto that segment of freeway; and M-78 had it's terminus scaled back at I-69 to avoid duplicate signage on the freeway corridor. Historical Note: M-78's original western point was at the Indiana state line with Indiana State Highway 9 south of Sturgis, Michigan. In 1965, after a 2-lane road was built from M-78/M-86 west of Colon, Michigan to M-60 east of Mendon, Michigan, M-78 from its M-66 junction to Indiana State Highway 9 was renamed M-66, and old M-78 from the eastern M-60/M-66 junction, past Sherwood, Michigan, to Colon was made a county road.
