Methodist Episcopal ChurchThe Methodist Episcopal Church, sometimes referred to as the M.E. Church, officially began at the Baltimore Christmas Conference in 1784. Francis Asbury and Thomas Coke (Methodist) were the first bishops. Circuit riders, many of which were laymen, traveled by horseback to preach the gospel and establish churches until there is scarcely any crossroad community in the United States without a Methodism expression of Christianity. The church split over the question of slavery in 1844 with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South being formed in southern states. In 1939 the two branches, together with the Methodist Protestant Church, united to form the Methodist Church. In 1968 the Methodist Church united with the Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) church, which were spiritual descendents of German language-speaking Methodists, to form the United Methodist Church. There are many offshoots of the original Methodist Episcopal Church in the US. For more detail see: Methodism. Methodism Methodist Episcopal Church==Church History Timeline== Would a timeline of the M.E. Church history be of help of interest? I received one today from the Archives of Ohio United Methodism, located on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio while gathering information from primary source material. user: stude62 user talk:stude62 01:26, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC) See other meanings of words starting from letter: MMA | MB | MC | MD | ME | MF | MG | MH | MI | MJ | MK | ML | MN | MO | MP | MR | MS | MT | MU | MW | MX | MY | MZ |Words begining with Methodist_Episcopal_Church: Methodist_Episcopal_Church Methodist_Episcopal_Church Methodist_Episcopal_Church,_South Methodist_Episcopal_Church,_South |
