Merge

:''For information about how to merge duplicate articles in Wikipedia, see Wikipedia:Duplicate articles'' Merge, merging, or merger can have several different meanings: * In business and economics, a merger is the combination of two company into one larger company * In computer science, either: **the merge algorithm which combines two or more sorted lists into a single sorted one **the merge sort, a sort algorithm that sorts a list by relying on the ''merge algorithm'' **Merge (software) is a computer package, a cut-down 'Virtual Machine', for running Windows 9x on x86 processors under UNIX * In criminal law, Doctrine of Merger characterises situations where one crime subsumes another * In linguistics, especially historical linguistics and dialectology, a merger is a sound change whereby two sounds that were originally separate phonemes come to be pronounced exactly the same. The so-called cot-caught merger in modern American English is an example. See also phonemic differentiation * In music, ** Merge (album) by Canadian musician Randy Bachman ** Merge Records, an indie-rock Independent record label based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina * In transport, ** merging is when a vehicle signals a lane change and then switches lanes, either because one lane is ending, to reach the correct lane to exit, or to reach a less congested lane in which one can go faster; merging is among the times when car accidents are more likely

:''See also :Template:Mergefrom'' :''See also :Template:Mergewith'' :''See also :Template:Merging'' :''See also :Template:MergeDisputed'' ==using {} as a parameter== I thought it would be nice to use {} as a parameter. It would contain the name of the page that the referring page should be merged with. Sadly, it would mean changing around the message on ''all'' pages presently for merge. Does anyone have a suggestion how we could implement this change? User:Jfdwolff | User_talk:Jfdwolff 17:45, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC) :I agree with what you've said and propose this new version: {{Message_box| id =Move| backgroundcolor =#fee| image =merge articles.gif| heading =This article should be Wikipedia:Duplicate articles with {}.| message =If you disagree with this then please discuss this on the article talk page.}} :Perhaps the second line could do with a little work (maybe linking to an article on how to change it to the dispute template. As for converting all the existing ones then either it'll take few people ages to do it manually or a bot could be used. User:Violetriga User_talk:violetriga 17:31, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC) ::A simpler way to do the transition is to add a new template, . The new template could then be phased in gradually (by being used by new merges). User:CesarB 03:44, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Merge

==Merging== ===Why to merge a page=== The best reason for merging is to provide context. If a term is most useful in context, it can be merged onto a larger article. If you object to an article because it is too short to be informative, then merging is generally preferable to requesting the article's deletion. Of course, so is expanding it, but some articles cannot feasibly be expanded (e.g. the individual horses now on Horses_of_Middle-earth). Merging should always leaves a redirect in place. Even if you think that's rather pointless or obscure, leave it in place anyway - it's generally established that superfluous redirects don't harm anything. When merging something into context, you may find that the information-to-be-merged is already there. In that case, you can simply replace the article-to-be-merged with a redirect, see below. ===How to merge a page=== #Go to the source page (e.g. "Lionel Hutz") #At the top of your screen, click the tab named "edit this page" #Open the destination page (e.g. "Characters from The Simpsons") in a second window (or browser tab) and also edit this #Select, cut and paste the entire content of the source page to the bottom of the destination page #Select and copy the ''name'' of the destination page #In the (now empty) source page, type ''"#redirect PAGENAME"'' (without the quotes, and pasting the name of the destination page instead of 'PAGENAME' #In the edit summary, type something like ''merged with PAGENAME'' #Save the source page (this is now a redirect, and it retains its edit history) #Click 'show preview' on the destination page #Edit the destination page until the layout is consistent #In the edit summary, type something like ''merged from SOURCEPAGE'' #Save the destination page. Note that it will not have the ''source page's'' edit history (but that still remains with the source page) #Test the merge by typing the name of the original page. You should be redirected to the destination page which will contain the article including the newly merged text. ===The short version=== If the above seems overly verbose, it can be a lot easier once you get the hang of it... #Open source and destination pages in two separate windows #Cut/paste source page into destination page #Put ''"#redirect PAGENAME"'' into the source page #Preview and edit destination page until it looks good and consistent #Save both, and note the merging in edit summaries ===If that fails=== If for some reason you cannot merge the pages, or you think the merging may be controversial, please go to WP:DP (Duplicate Pages) and post it there. ==Redirecting== ===Why to create a redirect=== The most obvious reason is common misspellings. For example, Charles Schultz redirects to Charles Schulz, because it is conceivable that people may make that misspelling. In general, if you're in doubt whether or not a redirect is useful, create one (or keep the existing one). Another reason for creating a redirect is if you wanted to merge a short article into a larger one, but all information contained in the short article is already there. In that case, you can overwrite the short article with a redirect, as explained here. ===How to create a redirect=== #Go to the 'wrong' name of the page, which likely doesn't exist #Click edit #Type in ''"#redirect PAGENAME"'', where PAGENAME is the correct page #Save ==Renaming (moving)== ===Why to rename a page=== On Wikipedia, usually anyone can rename a page from its current name to a new one. This is also called "moving" because the effect is as if the page has been moved. A redirect is automatically created at its old name so that links still work. After a move to correct a spelling mistake, you may want to ask an administrator to delete the misspelt redirect that is left over, but this isn't necessary and--who knows--it may be useful if your misspelling is a common one. The most common reason is when a page name is misspelled, or wrongly capitalized. Please fix any and all of those as you see them. Sometimes you may feel that a page is wrongly named for another reason - for instance, "Napoleon" is more properly known as "Napoleon I of France". ===How to rename a page=== #Go to the page you wish to rename. #At the top of your screen, click the tab named "move" #In the new screen, type the desired name, making sure you leave everything before the colon : intact #Click OK #There will be a redirect from the old page to the new page. Edit history is preserved at the location of the new page. ===If that fails=== Under no circumstances move or rename a page by copy/pasting its content. If for some reason you cannot rename a page, or you think the renaming may be controversial, please go to WP:RM (Requested Moves) and post it there. The most common reason for failure is that there is already an article at the place you're trying to move the article to. This is especially likely to happen if there is a history of moves from one name to another. This can be dealt with by an administrator after discussion on Requested Moves. If the destination does exist but it only contains a redirect without any history, the move will still work--the designers of the Wiki recognised this as a special case in which no information will be lost if a move is performed. Some things I've noticed.... * Merging automatically leaves a redirect in place. It doesn't actually; you have to manually create a redirect. Moving automatically creates a redirect. * How to merge a page seems far too long and detailed. If I was a new Wiki-editor, I'd be scared off by the many steps involved. If I was more experienced, I wouldn't need it at all. * Both sets of instructions suggest that cut & paste is all that's required for a merge. If that was true, then :Category:Articles to be merged wouldn't be so gargantuan. * Good idea about mentioning what to do when the information is already in the target article. -- User:Joy Stovall 04:43, Jun 5, 2005 (UTC) *I've made changes per your first point. You are correct about the second and third, but I'm not sure how to word that. I'll think on it, or feel free to do it yourself. Thanks!
