Maven

: ''For other uses of the word Maven see: Maven (disambiguation)'' A maven (also ''mavin'' or ''mayvin'') is an expert in a particular field, usually one who is self-appointed and who seeks to pass his knowledge on to others. ==History== The word comes from the Yiddish ''meyvn'' (מבֿין), with the same meaning, which in turn derives from the Hebrew language ''mayveen'', meaning to understand. It was first recorded in English language around 1952, and popularised in the 1960s by a series of commercials for Vita Herring created by Martin Solow, featuring "The Beloved Herring Maven." Since the 1980s it has become more common since William Safire adopted it to describe himself ("the language maven"). ==Usage== Malcolm Gladwell used it in his book The Tipping Point (book) (Little Brown, 2000) to describe those who are the first to pick up new trends. The work of Safire and Gladwell has made the word particularly widely used in their particular contexts. The word is mainly confined to American English. Some have identified the maven not just as a Jewish word, but as a Jewish concept. One site on Jewish language states, "A maven is an expert, and it's something that every Jew thinks he is on every subject that exists." [http://members.tripod.com/talk_jewish/id19_m.htm#machen_a_tzimmis] This highlights the fact that a maven being self-appointed, following his advice is an act of faith.

Maven

"This highlights the fact that a maven being self-appointed, his advice must always be taken on trust." Final sentance removed as logically flawed - a person may present a reasoned argument. Moreover, a person my be appointed by others but one still has to trust those others. ---- Article listed on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion Apr 23 to Apr 29 2004, kept as consensus was not reached. Discussion: * The story is this: I created the page that is now at Maven (Scrabble) originally under the title "Maven". Then someone added a dicdef at the bottom, separated by an ugly hr. I removed the dicdef and added it to the first paragraph as an explanation of the origin of Maven's name, but they reverted it. Since I hate it when people put two almost unrelated things onto the same page, I split it into two articles then, but since I think that Maven is a dicdef and won't be much more, I'm voting to delete it and move Maven (Scrabble) back to Maven. — User:Timwi 12:44, 23 Apr 2004 (UTC) **Tim, calm. Deep breath, Valium. As you know, the piece is a work in progress, so I don't know how you expect people to make an informed decision yet. FWIW, this is a word with subtle shades of meaning, used in particular contexts, and with complex relations to the original Yiddish/Hebrew forms and to Jewish culture more generally. I think there's ample material there for an article. User:Markalexander100 17:59, 23 Apr 2004 (UTC) *Keep. -User:Gtrmp 01:16, 25 Apr 2004 (UTC) *Keep. I enjoyed reading both articles. User:Andrewa 03:18, 25 Apr 2004 (UTC) *Keep. And since "Maven" has a generic meaning (and any article, current or future, on the generic meaning could well grow larger) Maven (Scrabble) would seem to be the right title for that article whether or not Maven stays. User:Jgm 05:27, 25 Apr 2004 (UTC) *Neutral on keep question, but still donate to wiktionary. Maven should have a link to Maven (disambiguation) or become a disambiguation page itself - with links to Maven (Scrabble) and the future article Apache Maven [http://maven.apache.org] [http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=apache+maven]. --User:Zigger 17:37, 2004 Apr 25 (UTC) ''End discussion'' There's also the Maven software by Maven Networks [http://www.maven.net], used by AtomFilms [http://atomfilms.shockwave.com/af/spotlight/collections/hidef/] HiDef. 18:26, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC) (User:Hooloovoo) I've created a Maven (disambiguation) page and put links to the known Mavens there, editing the articles to point back to the disamb page. This page also has links to future articles on the Maven software I pointed out above. -- User:Hooloovoo11:16, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
