Matrix

The word matrix (plural matrices, or less often, matrixes) has several meanings. Generally speaking, a matrix is something that provides support or structure, especially in the sense of surrounding and/or shaping. It comes from the Latin word for "womb", which itself derived from the Latin word for "mother", which is ''mater'', and was the term for a female animal used for breeding, or a parent plant. Various disciplines use the term "matrix" with differing meanings: ==Sciences== * In mathematics, a matrix (mathematics) is a rectangular array of scalars, especially when thought of as arguments to the operations of matrix multiplication and matrix addition, or as representing linear transformations. * In computer programming, a matrix is a 2-dimensional array. * In biology, the extracellular matrix is the material between animal or plant cell (biology). The word "matrix" alone may refer to this, or generally the material (or "tissue") in which more specialized structures are embedded. Alternatively, it can refer to one part of the mitochondrion. See matrix (biology). * In geology, the outer material of a rock consisting of larger grains embedded in a material consisting of smaller ones is called a matrix (geology). * In archaeology, the matrix is the sediment surrounding and including the Artifact (archaeology)s, features, and other materials at an archaeological site. * In chemistry, specifically analytical chemistry, the matrix is the environment from which a given sample is taken from. The properties of the matrix determine the calibration of the instrumentation and what techniques can and cannot be used. ==Technology== * In composite materials, a matrix is used to bind together (generally harder, more brittle) fibers or aggregate (composite) particles. It is the component used to resist shear stresses. Portland cement is the matrix for most concrete, and epoxy is often the matrix for carbon fiber composites. * In the kind of printing which involves setting type, a matrix (often called a "mat") is a mold for shaping the letters; see matrix (printing). * In sound recording, a matrix can refer to a disc in the early stages of processing a record for mass production; see matrix (sound recording). ==Names, acronyms and trademarks== * In the cosmetics and beauty industry, Matrix is a division of the '''L'Oréal. Matrix offers products for hair coloring, hair styling, and hair care. It is also the leading brand for hair salon professionals. * As an acronym, MATRIX is the Multistate Anti-Terrorism Information Exchange. * In transport, the Toyota Matrix is an automobile produced by Toyota. In Europe, the trademark is used by Hyundai for the Korean Hyundai Lavita. * In Organisation theory a Organisation#Matrix_Organisation is a style of organisation which encourages cross departmental co-operation rather than a strict hierarchy. * The Matrix (music producer) is a group of music producers who have worked with singers such as Avril Lavigne and Liz Phair. * The Matrix is also the nickname of National Basketball Association player Shawn Marion. * In the Mainframe Entertainment series, ReBoot Enzo Matrix is one of the characters. * The Matrix Club was a popular music venue located in San Francisco,CA. * The Matrix-6, Matrix-12, and Matrix-1000 are analog synthesizers from Oberheim. ==Arts, literature and movies== * The film, ''The Matrix''. * In Montreal, Canada, ''[http://alcor.concordia.ca/~matrix/ Matrix]''''' is a literary magazine. * In William Gibson (novelist)'s The Sprawl novels and the role-playing game ''Shadowrun'', the Matrix is the 3D next-generation internet. * In the United Kingdom science fiction on television series ''Doctor Who'', the Matrix (Doctor Who) is an advanced computer network and a virtual reality environment first featured in the 1976 serial ''The Deadly Assassin''. * In the animated series and comics ''the Transformers'', the Matrix is an object of massive power typically held by the Autobot leader. See Autobot Matrix of Leadership. * In the 1985 Mark Lester film Commando, Arnold Schwarzenegger starred as Colonel John Matrix. * In the animated series ''Gargoyles (animated series)'', the Matrix is the name of the collective intelligence of a mass of nanotechnology that is so advanced that it gains an artificial intelligence and threatens a gray goo crisis until the former enemy, Dingo, partially joins with it to teach it about human society and thus keep it occupied constructively. * In music, especially folk music and popular music, a matrix (music) is an element of variations which does not change. In the twelve tone technique a matrix is used to visualize all permutations of a tone row. * In the popular fantasy series of Darkover, a matrix is a crystal that acts as the catalyst to enable use of the characters' telepathic 'laran' powers. simple:Matrix vi:Ma trận

---- I don't think the Matrix car is made by Hyundai. Its made by Toyota. But because someone listed it as Hyundai, I won't edit it because they might know something I don't. :You're right, it is. See http://www.toyota.com/matrix/ --User:JamesTseng 14:18, Oct 19, 2004 (UTC) We're both right, actually: http://www.hyundai-matrix.it/matrix/index.cfm ---- Someone messed up the whole process...I guess I'll just turn this into a disambiguation page since Matrix_(math) already exists. User:Lockeownzj00 05:45, 25 Jun 2004 (UTC) Shouldn't this be turned into a disambigution page and the content moved made seperate articles?????? User:Chrissmith ---- Perhaps it should be mentioned that a matrix that has dimensions 1Xn or nX1 is also a vector? Also, I've seen (and used elsewhere in Wikipedia) the notation A transpose = AT. The text book used a sans-serif T, but it was just a T nonetheless. Should we mention this alternate notation? ---- A matrix is also a part of mitochondria. ---- I got lost when the m by p matrix was not explained. What's the p? ---- Shouldn't the part about matrix theory be at Matrix theory? User:Jheijmans ---- I have a question about the new intro: is it really true that tables containing birth dates and names, i.e. spreadsheets, are called ''matrices''? Most people seem to call those "tables", and reserve the word "matrix" for tables containing numbers. User:AxelBoldt 21:51 Oct 4, 2002 (UTC) : I agree with you, Axel. The term "matrix" was originally coined specifically in maths (can;t remember if I've already put that in the article... ) -- User:Tarquin 09:58 Oct 5, 2002 (UTC) Are there no unabridged dictionaries where you people are? Not only does the word "matrix" have meanings in many different fields (including biology, geology, and printing) besides generally meaning a table of data, but even in the field of math it isn't always a table of numbers: In statistics it often means a table of descriptive data (when you're doing significance tests or other comparisons) like straight/curly or blue/brown/green. The word derives from "mother" (by way of "uterus") and means any substance or framework for holding the object of interest, including a table of data. According to my Latin dictionary, the equivalent of the English "matrix" is ''"forma"'', which has -- guess what -- the same meaning as the word "matrix" in English: a mold or framework for shaping something or an outline or diagram of info. -- User:Isis 12:28 Oct 10, 2002 (UTC) ''The Bantam Medical Dictionary'' (©1981):
"matrix ''n.'' the substance of a tissue or organ in which more specialized structures are embedded; for example the ground substance of connective tissue." ''Dictionary of Geological Terms'' (©1957):
"matrix ''1.'' In a rock in which certain grains are much larger than the others, the grains of smaller size comprise the matrix. The groundmass of porphyritic igneous rocks. ''2.'' The natural material in which any metal, fossil, pebble, crystal, etc., is embedded." ''The New American Computer Dictionary'' (©1983):
"matrix A conceptualized ''array'' of numerous items of related information, arranged by rows and columns. Each individual element is indexed by the use of subscripts indicating its row and column numbers."
"array An organized collection of data arranged in rows and columns for ease in indexing. An individual item can be referenced (read or written) by specifying the name of the array and the row and column numbers of the item. Most ''high-level programming languages'' provide such a facility. Interchangeable with ''matrix''." These sources may be outdated, but I submit they were accurate at the time they were published. Therefore you may be able to convince me nobody but me uses the word "matrix" these ways anymore, but you'll never convince me the only meaning "matrix" has had in recent memory is "rectangular table of numbers.” -- User:Isis 13:06 Oct 10, 2002 (UTC) ---- We need to rearrange this article. First, just as Isis says, it is too mathematical-oriented. Second, it failed to mention matrices over ring, which is also a very important mathematical branch. User:Wshun Rearrangement is done. The original long mathematics section is moved to Matrix (Mathematics). It would be nice if somebody could add more about ''matrix'' in other fields. User:Wshun --- The identity matrix is not a matrix, yet it is forwarded to just Matrix. User:Mattsm 07:01 Jan 7, 2003 (UTC) == Disambiguation == I agree with what some others have said here: this article ''must'' be turned into a disambiguation page. Here's another use of "matrix" for you guys, too: it's often used in sci-fi (especially "cyberpunk") novels in reference to any global network similar to the modern Internet, only more advanced. (This is where The Matrix gets its name.) One example of this is the game Shadowrun. --User:Furrykef 22:53, 15 Jun 2004 (UTC) ---- Is it worth adding: *In computer science, a two-dimensional array. ? User:RJFJR 00:40, Dec 27, 2004 (UTC) == Disambiguation == Is it worth putting a notice at the top saying that this is for the word matrix and not the movie? Only it's such a popular movie loads of people will be coming to this page wanting to find the movie. I know there is a link further down the page, but maybe a more prominent one would be OK?
