Marmoset18 species, see text The marmosets are the genus ''Callithrix'' of New World monkeys. One species not classified in this genus also has common names including the word "marmoset", the Goeldi's Marmoset (''Callimico goeldii''). This article deals only with the 18 species currently classified in ''Callithrix''. Most marmosets are about 20cm in length. Relative to other monkeys, they show a number of apparently primitive features: they have claws rather than nail (anatomy)s, and tactile hairs on their wrists. They lack wisdom tooth, and their brain layout seems to be relatively primitive. Their body temperature is unusually variable, showing as much as 4 degrees C change in a day. Marmosets are highly active, living in the upper canopy of forest trees, and feeding on insects, fruit and leaves. They have long lower incisors, which enable them to chew holes in the trunks or branches of trees so as to harvest the gum inside; some species are specialised feeders on gum. Marmosets live in small family groups consisting of a mated pair and their offspring, thus making marmosets (along with gibbons) some of the few monogamous primates. They are thought to be territory (animal). In most species, twins are usually born, though triplets are not unknown. A high degree of paternal care is shown, and the male usually carries the infants on his back as the family group moves around. ==Species list== * Subgenus ''' ''Callithrix'' - Atlantic marmosets''' ** Common Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Callithrix) jacchus'' ** Black-tufted Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Callithrix) penicillata'' ** Wied's Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Callithrix) kuhlii'' ** White-headed Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Callithrix) geoffroyi'' ** Buffy-headed Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Callithrix) flaviceps'' ** Buffy-tufted Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Callithrix) aurita'' * Subgenus ''' ''Mico'' - Amazonian marmosets''' ** Rio Acari Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Mico) acariensis'' ** Manicore Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Mico) manicorensis'' ** Silvery Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Mico) argentata'' ** White Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Mico) leucippe'' ** Emilia's Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Mico) emiliae'' ** Black-headed Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Mico) nigriceps'' ** Marca's Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Mico) marcai'' ** Black-tailed Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Mico) melanura'' ** Santarem Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Mico) humeralifera'' ** Maués Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Mico) mauesi'' ** Gold-and-white Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Mico) chrysoleuca'' ** Hershkovitz's Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Mico) intermedia'' ** Satéré Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Mico) saterei'' * Subgenus ''' ''Callibella'' - Roosmalens' Dwarf Marmoset''' ** Roosmalens' Dwarf Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Callibella) humilis'' * Subgenus ''' ''Cebuella'' - Pygmy Marmoset''' ** Pygmy Marmoset, ''Callithrix (Cebuella) pygmaea'' New World monkeys Marmoset"They lack wisdom teeth." This sounds funny, as marmosets are platyrrhines, and platyrrhines have a dental formula of 2.1.3.3 or 2.1.3.2. Is any animal other than a catarrhine said to have wisdom teeth? -User:PierreAbbat 15:14, 27 Jun 2004 (UTC) :Wisdom teeth in humans are the third set of molars. However, it is not the dental pattern that gives them their name, but the fact that they arrive later in life than the other adult molars. (See the article for more details.) If this late arrival of the (final) set of molars occurs in other species, it would be that set that is deemed to be wisdom teeth. If all the adult teeth arrive at about the same time, then the species does not have wisdom teeth. - User:UtherSRG 01:53, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC) See other meanings of words starting from letter: MMA | MB | MC | MD | ME | MF | MG | MH | MI | MJ | MK | ML | MN | MO | MP | MR | MS | MT | MU | MW | MX | MY | MZ |Words begining with Marmoset: Marmoset Marmoset Marmosets |
