MAGENTA

In cryptography, MAGENTA is a symmetric key algorithm block cipher developed by Deutsche Telekom. The name MAGENTA is an acronym for Multifunctional Algorithm for General-purpose Encryption and Network Telecommunication Applications. (The color magenta is also part of the corporate identity of Deutsche Telekom.) The cipher was submitted to the Advanced Encryption Standard process, but did not advance beyond the first round; cryptanalysis were discovered and it was found to be one of the slower ciphers submitted [http://csrc.nist.gov/CryptoToolkit/aes/round1/testvals/]. MAGENTA has a block size (cryptography) of 128 bits and key sizes of 128, 192 and 256 bits. It is a Feistel cipher with six rounds. After the presentation of the cipher at the first AES conference, several cryptographers immediately found vulnerabilities [http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=6rj4sf%24f8p%241%40nnrp1.dejanews.com]. These were written up and presented at the second AES conference (Biham et al, 1999). ==References== * Eli Biham, Alex Biryukov, Niels Ferguson, Lars Knudsen, Bruce Schneier and Adi Shamir, "Cryptanalysis of Magenta", Second AES candidate conference, April 1999 [http://www.schneier.com/paper-magenta.pdf (PDF)]. == External links == * [http://home.ecn.ab.ca/~jsavard/crypto/co040411.htm John Savard's description of Magenta] * [http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/hopwood/crypto/scan/cs.html#MAGENTA SCAN's entry for the cipher] * [http://www.gel.ulaval.ca/~klein/maitrise/aes/magenta.pdf Paper describing Magenta] Block ciphers

Magenta

:''This article is about the dye color magenta. For other uses, see Magenta (disambiguation).'' Magenta is a color that is not a Optical spectrum color: that is to say, the hue cannot be generated by light of a single wavelength. A magenta hue can be witnessed by mixing equal amounts of red and blue light. As such, magenta is the complementary color of green: magenta pigments absorb green light. With yellow and cyan, it constitutes the three subtractive primary colors.
==History== Magenta was one of the first aniline dyes, discovered shortly after the Battle of Magenta (1859), which occurred near the town of Magenta, Italy in northern Italy. The color is named after the battle, and hence indirectly after the town. The difference between magenta and purple is the amount of red/blue in the color. A variant of magenta is Fuchsia (color) after the color of the flowers of the same name, named after Leonhart Fuchs. If the visible spectrum is wrapped to form a color wheel, magenta appears between red and blue:

== Magenta wraps between... == It says in this article that magenta wraps between red and blue in the color wheel. However, the colors at the edges of the spectrum are red and violet. Any clarifications?? User:Georgia guy 00:47, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC) :The spectrum shown in the article is incorrect, as it shows a ''real'' violet — but violet is extraspectral too! This is probably both an overcorrection of the imperfect blue used by standard monitors and a reflection of the mistake to equate the spectrum with the colours of the rainbow, which is an extreme simplification--User:MWAK 05:05, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC) ::Show that the colors of the spectrum are not the same as the colors of the rainbow. User:Georgia guy 13:36, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC) In my defintion, violet is spectral, with a wavelength of about 400nm, see also [http://eosweb.larc.nasa.gov/EDDOCS/Wavelengths_for_Colors.html]. --User:Pjacobi 07:06, 2005 Jun 21 (UTC) :If we define it as such; it's correct — by definition :o). But others define the same hue as "blue", the blue referred to in "wraps between blue and red". One cause of confusion. And the hue in the spectrum illustrated in the article is not the 400 nm one. Can't you feel the red vibes? ;o)--User:MWAK 09:15, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC) No, I'm red-green blind. --User:Pjacobi 09:58, 2005 Jun 21 (UTC) ~:o)--User:MWAK 05:40, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC) == Equating Magenta and Fuchsia == Are the 2 color names exactly the same?? This article equates them, but there are some sources, such as Crayola Crayons, that do not. Any opinions?? User:Georgia guy 21:58, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC) :My opinion is that they are not the same at all. I think Fuschia is a lighter shade of Magenta. --User:WillDarlock 17:52, 14 May 2005 (UTC) ::Specifically, what color (using RGB coordinates)?? User:Georgia guy 17:54, 14 May 2005 (UTC) ::Comparing it to the Fuschia hybrid plant and some other fuschia examples, the RGB I get is around (244, 0, 161). You can see it's a little pinker and lighter than Magenta. --User:WillDarlock 19:50, 14 May 2005 (UTC) :::The commercial colour name ''Fuchsia'' is used for a much more saturated colour — and it's the origin of the common usage.--User:MWAK 05:05, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)
