It was identical to the second-generation Austin-Healey Sprite, which it outlasted. Both began with 948 cc ''Austin A-Series engine'' engines from the Morris Minor ''1000''. The Midget and Sprite received larger 1098 cc engines in late 1962, along with updated brakes (disc brake in front). The engine was enlarged to 1275 cc for 1966. In 1974, the Midget and Sprite were updated for USA regulations. Black bumpers were fitted (as on the MG B), and the engine from the Triumph Spitfire was used instead of the old A-Series motor.
