Lupus:''For the autoimmune disorder see lupus erythematosus.'' Lupus (Latin for ''Wolf'') is a southern constellation. It is one of the 88 modern constellations and was also one of the 48 in Ptolemy's Almagest. It is between Centaurus and Scorpius. ==Notable features== Lupus has no extremely bright stars, but has around thirty stars of second and third apparent magnitude and 70 of greater than sixth, including a number of binary star or multiple stars. The stars which make up the constellation figure have no names, the brightest is α Lupi, a blue giant. ==Notable deep sky objects== Towards the north of the constellation are globular clusters NGC 5824 and NGC 5986, and close by the dark nebula B 228. Two open clusters are to the south of the constellation, NGC 5822 and NGC 5749. On the western border are two spiral galaxy and the Wolf-Rayet star planetary nebula IC 4406, containing some of the hottest stars in existence. Another planetary nebula, NGC 5882, is towards the centre of the constellation. ==Mythology and History== The constellation has no clear mythology, but is sometimes associated with the tale of Lycaon. Although known from ancient times no particular animal was associated with it until the Latin translation of Ptolemy's work identified it with the wolf. It was not separated from Centaurus until Hipparchus of Bithynia named it ''Therion'' (meaning ''beast'') in the 200s BC. Prior to its separation it was considered an asterism (astronomy) of Centaurus, and was considered to have been an arbitrary animal, killed, or about to be killed, on behalf of, or for, Centaurus. As such, together with other constellations in the Zodiac sign of Virgo (specifically, Sagitta, and Centaurus) it may have formed the basis of the tale of the Erymanthian Boar, one of The Twelve Labours of Herakles. ==Stars== :Stars with proper names: :* ''Alpha Lupi'' or ''Kakkab'' (α Lup) 2.30 :* ''Beta Lupi'' (β Lup) 2.68 :*: < 騎官 (Mandarin ''qíguān'') The cavalry officer :Stars with Bayer designations: :: Gamma Lupi 2.80; Delta Lupi 3.22; Epsilon Lupi 3.37; Zeta Lupi 3.41; Eta Lupi 3.42; Theta Lupi 4.22; Iota Lupi 3.55; Kappa1 Lupi 3.88; Kappa2 Lupi 5.70; Lambda Lupi 4.07; Mu Lupi 4.27; Nu1 Lupi 4.99; Nu2 Lupi 5.65; Xi1 Lupi 5.14; Xi2 Lupi 5.59; Omicron Lupi 4.32; Pi Lupi – double 3.91, 4.82; Rho Lupi 4.05; Sigma Lupi 4.44; Tau1 Lupi 4.56; Tau2 Lupi 4.33; Upsilon Lupi 5.36; Chi Lupi 3.97; Phi1 Lupi 3.57; Phi2 Lupi 4.54; Psi1 Lupi 4.66; Psi2 Lupi 4.75; Omega Lupi 4.34; a Lupi 5.39; b Lupi 5.22; c Lupi 5.38; d Lupi 4.55; e Lupi 4.83; 2 Lupi 4.35; g Lupi 4.64; h Lupi 5.23; 1 Lupi 4.91; k Lupi 4.60 Lupus constellation th:กลุ่มดาวหมาป่า See other meanings of words starting from letter: LLA | LB | LC | LD | LE | LF | LG | LH | LI | LJ | LK | LM | LN | LO | LP | LR | LS | LT | LU | LW | LX | LY | LZ |Words begining with Lupus: Lupus Lupus,_Missouri Lupus,_MO Lupusmd Lupus_(constellation) Lupus_(disambiguation) Lupus_anticoagulant Lupus_anticoagulant Lupus_constellation Lupus_constellation Lupus_Erythematosus Lupus_erythematosus Lupus_erythematosus Lupus_nephritis |
