List of computer and video games by genre

This article gives a list of computer games and video games by category, i.e. arranged alphabetically by video game genres. Some categories/genres are briefly defined at the beginning of their respective sections. For an alphabetical list of games sorted by title, see list of computer and video games by name. ===Action-Adventure=== Action-adventure games are those where action is the predominant aspect of gameplay, but puzzle-solving and the exploration of, and interaction with, the environment are also key to gameplay; as opposed to "pure" #Adventure games, where action sequences are the exception rather than the rule. With technological limitations on gameplay becoming less of an issue to game designers, more action games are overlapping into this category. Indeed, this is how Will Wright, the game designer of the most popular video game of all time, The Sims, describes his games. These games aim to similate a specific activity (such as flying an airplane) as realistically as practically possible, taking into account physics and other real-world limitations. Some require a great deal of reading before the game can even be attempted, while others include a simple tutorial. Some of these types of games, such as flight simulators, have a limited following, while others, such as ''The Sims'' have an enormous following, including those who don't consider themselves "gamers." *''Ace combat'' *''FlightGear'' *''Microsoft Flight Simulator'' series *''Orbiter (game)'' *''Rollercoaster Tycoon'' series *''Silent Hunter'' *''The Sims'' *''SimAnt'' *''SimCity'' series *''SimEarth'' *''SimFarm'' *''Sim Park'' *''Simutrans'' *''Stunt Island'' *''Virtual U'' *''X-Plane'' ===Space simulation=== Space simulations tend to be much like flight simulations but generally have to take many liberties to adapt the "true" physics of spaceflight to be more player-friendly. *''Descent: Freespace'' *''Elite (computer game)'' *''Freelancer (computer game)'' *''Galaxy Trek'' *''X2: The Threat'' ===Sports=== *''Activision Boxing'' *''Activision Tennis'' *''All Star Baseball 2003'' *''Arch Rivals'' *''Backyard Sports'' series *''Championship Manager'' *Electronic Arts ''National Hockey League'' series *''Hardball (computer game)'' series *''John Madden Football'' series *''Kick Off'' *''Knockout Kings'' series *''Mutant League'' series *''NBA Jam'' series *''NBA ShootOut'' series *''Rumble in the Rink'' *''Tecmo Super Bowl'' series ===Stealth Action=== *''Metal Gear'' series *''Splinter Cell'' series *''Thief (computer game)'' series ===Strategy=== ====General Strategy==== *''Defender of the Crown'' *''Lords of Conquest'' *''Wargame Construction Set'' ====Browser-based==== *''Age of Wonders'' series *''Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri'' *''Battle Isle'' series *''Battle for Wesnoth'' *''Chaos (video game)'' series *''Civilization video game'' series *''Colonization'' *''Dominions II'' *''Fire Emblem'' series *''Galactic Civilizations'' *''Heroes of Might and Magic'' series *''Jagged Alliance'' series *''Master of Magic'' *''Master of Orion'' series *''Stars!'' *''VGA Planets'' (for play-by-email) *''WarLords'' series *''Worms computer games'' series *''X-COM'' (UFO) series ====real-time strategy==== *''Age of Empires'' series *''Age of Mythology'' series *''Black and White (computer game)'' *''Close Combat (game)'' series *''Command and Conquer'' series *''Commandos'' series *''The Corporate Machine'' *''Dark Reign'' *''Dune (computer game)#Dune II'' *''Dungeon Keeper'' series *''Europa Universalis'' series *''Ground Control'' series *''Homeworld'' series *''Myth (computer game)'' series *''Perimeter'' *''Populous'' series *''Railroad Tycoon'' *''Red Alert (computer game)'' *''The Settlers'' series *''StarCraft'' & add-on *''Sudden Strike'' *''Superpower 2'' *''Syndicate computer games'' series *''Total Annihilation'' *''Total War'' series *''Warcraft'' series *''War of the Ring'' - based on Lord of the Rings novel ===Survival Horror=== Survival Horror games focus on fear and attempt to scare the player via traditional horror elements such as atmospherics, death, the undead, blood and gore. List of computer and video games by genre

i feel this list should be replaced by a category system. however, there are nice definitions of the sub-genres and also a the "people" section seem valuable for me. i hope someone can transform the content of this page into a better category system. --User:Horst F JENS 15:40, 2004 Jun 18 (UTC) :The definitions are from Computer and video game genres, the people section is now at List of computer and video game industry people, so I think this list can be deleted as soon as all games have their categories. --User:ContiE|User talk:ContiE 18:09, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC) :It looks to me that pretty much any game is in a category, so this goes to VfD now. --User:ContiE|User talk:ContiE 18:18, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC) ::Is there a nice user-friendly interface to these particular categories? Are there links from all relevant articles (that linked to this page in the past) to all relevant categories? If the answer is negative, we can't delete this page yet. User:Paranoid 19:08, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC) :::I can change the links, so they would link to the categories. I also can put the nice definitions of each genre from Computer and video game genres to the category of that genre. Why do we have the category system when we keep lists like this anyways? --User:ContiE|User talk:ContiE 19:23, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC) ::::You cleverly blew away all the free links to articles that hadn't been written yet however. Lists are only equivalent to categories when every single list item has an article, which was not the case here. User:Stan Shebs 19:26, 10 Jul 2004 (UTC) :::::There will never be an article about every single game that exist, so you're right here. I still prefer the category-system, but it seems that the majority of the wikipedians that raised their voice here wants to keep the list, so I think it would be best to restore it. --User:ContiE|User talk:ContiE 20:04, 10 Jul 2004 (UTC) ::::::I understand the reasons for deletion as well as the value of keeping the list. I think that a good solution would be to add some comments on the category pages first (so that they have not just the links, but a brief 1-paragraph description and a direct link to the article about the genre. And to solve the problem of links to unwritten articles we should write stubs or add the links to articles on sub-genre. Of course, it's a problem that there currently is no article on Perimeter, a new innovative RTS, but eventually someone will write about it anyway and if I thought it is so important, I could have at least add a comment about it in real-time strategy or its talk page. User:Paranoid 21:27, 10 Jul 2004 (UTC) ---- Article was listed on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion July 2 to July 10 2004, consensus was to redirect to :Category:Computer and video game genres. Discussion may be found at Talk:List of computer and video games by category/Delete. ---- The redirect had only a fraction of the information, and according to the discussion redirecting wasn't a total consensus either. Considering the short length of the vote, and the issues with the category page - the page was brought back. User:Dcrt888 11:18, 2 Aug 2004 (UTC) ====New Additions==== So, I've added my FPS list. I've been compiling this for years, It's home is at http://firstpersonshooters.org/ I'd appreciate letting me know anything I may have missed. ::... as well as keeping it updated as I update my list... I got tired of seeing so many titles there with absolutely nothing about them. So I made links for the titles that didn't have a wiki entry. Not everything on my site has info yet, but most titles do and that's alot better than simply seeing the name of it. The only disadvantage for this that I can see is that you'd have to manually edit rather than simply clicking to add a wiki entry, but you would have had to do that before I turned everything into links anyway. If there's a particular title that my site doesn't have anything about either, let me know and I'll go find and put something there. I want every single first person shooter ever created or considered to be represented. (http://firstpersonshooters.org/, eliteinc@comcast.net, FPS@landofthedragons.com) I'm glad the list remains. This is a resource, not just of other resources within it. If all that is listed is things that there's further information on, many of the things which are lesser known may never make their way in, and may not do their duty as part of their genre to help spark interest in it. I cleaned up the FPS list a bit, everything should now link either to it's Wiki article, where one exists, or to my site where if there isn't info about the title, I will add some as soon as it's brought to my attention. And I'm going to keep putting it back forever. Some rediculous soul out there thinks it's better to give people no information instead of some information just because it all happens to be from one place. If this were a politically oriented topic they might be correct, but since it's not, they are dead wrong. Actually, no... Since I went to all that trouble to provide information for all those titles, and spent hours just getting this list straight, and since it's not appreciated, this list which is my blood & breath, will no longer be made available on wikipedia.
