Lawrence Academy at GrotonLawrence Academy at Groton is a co-educational preparatory school located in Groton, Massachusetts. It was founded by Samuel Lawrence (revolutionary) in 1793 as Groton Academy, and chartered by Governor John Hancock. The school changed its name in 1845, to honor Amos Lawrence, Abbott Lawrence, and William Lawrence (Massachusetts), famed alumni, and major benefactors during that era. Lawrence Academy has gained renown for excellent university preparation, and an innovative curriculum, engendering experiential learning. Signature programs include Winterim, a two-week adventure term, and Independent Immersion, a year-long program in which a student focuses on a single endeavor, as though at a conservatory. Lawrence Academy aims to stimulate creative thinking and foster active participation in society. The phrase on Lawrence Academy's seal is "Omnibus Lucet" -- in Latin, "Let light shine upon all." Lawrence Academy is seated upon 100 acres (405,000 m²) of rolling countryside, in Groton, Massachusetts, 31 miles northwest of Boston, 8 miles south of New Hampshire. Architecturally, it's campus features a mix of historic, Neo-Classical houses and Georgian architecture academic buildings. Each year Lawrence Academy enrolls approximately 375 students, (200 boarding students.) Admission is highly selective. The student-teacher ratio is approximately 7:1, with an average class size of 11 students. Tuition for the 2004-2005 academic year is $34,800 for boarders, $26,400 for day students. 30% of students receive financial aid to attend. Lawrence Academy is close enough to several urban centers so that students can take advantage of urban social, cultural, and recreational offerings, yet it is far enough removed so that students can enjoy the quiet, bucolic character of the New England countryside. It is one of two preparatory schools in the town of Groton, Massachusetts, along with the Groton School. Lawrence Academy is directed by a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees. It is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and is a member of the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council. Lawrence Academy has over 3,500 alumni. It's current headmaster is Scott Wiggins. School colors are red and blue; athletic teams are known as the Spartans.
