Khulna DivisionKhulna division is a region in south-east Bangladesh. Its capital is Khulna. Other major cities and towns include Barisla, Bhola, Chalna Port, Chuadanga, Jessore and Patuakhali. The region borders the Bangladeshi region of Rajshahi to the north, the Bangladeshi regions of Dhaka Division and Chittagong Division to the east, the Bay of Bengal to the south and India to the west. Part of the Ganges River is in the north of the region. Other rivers include the Maghumait River, the Bhairab River and the Kabadak River. The region also has several islands in the Bay of Bengal. Another name for Khulna is "the industrial city" or Shilpa Nagori (in Bangla Shilpa = Industry and Nagori = city). Khulna was the backbone of the then East Pakistan's only foreign currency earner Jute industry. There are many large Jute mills located in Khalispure near Khulna city also the other heavy industries like Khulna News Print mills, Khulna Hardboard mills etc. The only ship building industry of the country is also located in Khulna. One of the world's largest mangrove forest the "Sundarban" (means fine Jungle in Bangla) and the second largest sea port of the country is situated at Mongla making Khulna an all rounded city rich with industry and natural setting. In terms of per capita educational rate, Khulna ranks one of the highest in the country. Khulna hosts world class universities for engineering and medical science free of student political activity. There are many public libraries and state-of-the-art hospital facilities both operated by public and private investors. During the great liberation war Khulna played a great role being so close to Indian border. Many of the great leaders are originally from Khulna. Today Khulna is a bustling metropolitan city with over 1 million people. You will find the people of Khulna being the most friendly among all Bangladeshis and they speak the purest form of Bangla Language. Although Khulna has always been a quiet and peaceful place to live until recently, a few violent activities committed by few radicals of outlawed communist parties as well as some supporters of gangster political leaders (both ruling and opposition parties) have made Khulna the centre of the national newspaper. Khulna native peoples have always been brave, intellectual and kind to understand differences between rival groups and it is a matter of time before things will improve.
