Iranian frigate SabalanThe '''Iranian frigate ''Sabalan''''', a British made Vosper Mark 5-class frigate, was commissioned in June, 1972 as one of four Mark 5-class frigates delivered to Iran. During the Iran-Iraq War, the warship was ignominiously noted for attacks against the crews of unarmed shipping including against neutral vessels such as a Panamanian tanker. ==Participation in Operation Praying Mantis== Following the spillover of the conflict onto the Persian Gulf, the United States deployed a substantial naval force through 1987-1988 to protect American and reflagged Kuwaiti shipping and assets in the gulf. The deployment dubbed Operation Earnest Will crescendoed after a US frigate was damaged by an Iranian mine, which prompted the retalitory action, Operation Praying Mantis. The US force obejectives were to destroy Iranian oil platforms used for both drilling and attack coordination and the ill-regarded ''Sabalan''. On the morning of April 18, 1988, the oil platforms were knocked out turning the operation to a search for reported frigates in the Strait of Hormuz, a body of water between the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. ''Sabalan's'' sister frigate was identified by aircraft from the ''USS Enterprise'' and drawn into her fatal engagement. Another group of aircraft made up of A-6 Intruder was diverted to the reported location of the ''Sabalan'' in the strait, where, once discovered, the frigate engaged the A-6s at 6.17 pm (Gulf time) with anti-aircraft fire. At 6.18 pm, an A-6 responded by dropping a Mark 82 bomb 500-pound laser guided bomb. The munition scored a hit and left the ''Sabalan'' paralyzed and sinking. At the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Frank Carlucci, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff William James Crowe Jr., and U.S. Central Command head George B. Crist monitored the situation. After discussion, the men decided to spare the moribund ''Sabalan''. The intervention may be explained by a willingness by the U.S. to conclude the action before any further escalation erupted. ==Aftermath== Two tugs towed the frigate to the port of Bandar-Abbas. Some in the Navy were critical of Carlucci's involvement in tactical decisions such as the release of the ''Sabalan''. ==References== *"How to waste a navy". (April 23, 1988).
