Inhibitory Post-Synaptic CurrentIn neurobiology, Inhibitory Post-Synaptic Current (IPSC) and the complementary process of Excitatory Post-Synaptic Current (EPSC) are thought to be the foundational concepts that underlie the basic features of neurotransmitter in mammalian cells. For example, in elementary neurochemistry an ''IPSC'' may inhibit the formation of an action potential by changing the ion content in the cell, thus perturbing the rest voltage of the cell so that the binding sites of certain neurotransmitters which exhibit Voltage-gated ion channel are selectively inhibited. Similarly an EPSC may induce cellular response by promoting the generation of an action potential. However, such responses are highly nuanced and largely based on the particular Ion channel in the cell membrane of the neuron.
