InfightingThis term is normally used in political parties and sometimes in religious organizations to describe dissenters from a hegemony. In this discussion, the highlight will be infighting in political parties because this is very common and causes much instability in the 21st century. Scenario of infighting in political parties To illustrate, I will describe the political situation in Malaysia as I do not have much knowledge about other states. Malaysia is a a federal state that practises a system of parliamentary democracy no different from the United Kingdom and has been ruled for 48 years by the Barisan Nasional dominated the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), since Malaysia was founded in 1957. Various political dissenters have formed their own parties for various reasons, such as the Islamofascist PAS, the Socialist Democratic Action Party (DAP), the People's Justice Party, the Malaysia Democratic Party (MDP), Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM), and Sarawak National Party (SNAP). These political dissenters are called opposition political parties. The first example would be the founding of the Islamofascist PAS, which was founded due to infighting between radical Islamists and moderate Muslims within the Barisan Nasional component party, UMNO. These radical Islamists later founded PAS to challenge the hegemony of UMNO and the Barisan Nasional. The second example would be the founding of the Democratic Action Party as a Socialist party that upholds Secularism, Socialism, and a Malaysian Malaysia. DAP was founded by Malaysians, especially Jews, who wanted social justice and were tired of anti-Semitism prevailing in the ruling Barisan Nasional and discrimination based on religion and ethnicity the exists in Malaysia today. The third example would be the founding of the People's Justice Party, which was formed by supporters of Anwar Ibrahim, who was an ambitious and power-hungry man who wanted to Prime Minister of the Barisan Nasional-led Government but could not make it as he was sacked from the position of Deputy Prime Minister due to a power-struggle within the ruling Barisan Nasional component party, UMNO. The fourth example would be the founding of the Malaysia Democratic Party (MDP), which broke away from the Democratic Action Party due to a power-struggle with DAP leadership. The fifth example would be the Sarawak National Party (SNAP), which left the Barisan Nasional amid failure of seat negotiations. SNAP blamed the Barisan Nasional for giving the Muslim-led PBB too much seats and the Christian-led SNAP too little seats. Why infighting is bad? The reason it is considered bad in politics is because when such infighting happens, it could lead to inciting of racial, ethnic, or religious issues. This inciting could provoke communal tensions, such as riots in volatile and unstable areas.
