Independent variableIn design of experiments, an independent variable is a random variable used to define treatment groups. For example, in a study of how different dosages of a drug are related to the severity of symptoms of a disease, the specific doses selected by the experimenters for investigation are the independent variable, while a measure of the severity of the symptoms of the disease is a dependent variable. More generally, the independent variable is the thing that someone actively controls/changes; while the dependent variable is the thing that changes as a result. When graphing a set of collected data, the independent variable is graphed on the x-axis. Experimental design Independent variableI deleted a paragraph stating that if the dependent and independent variables are related by a mathematical function the experiments will produce statistically significant data. Sorry, this is just plain wrong, no offense. Normally I would try and fix something rather than delete it, but there really is no direct connection between the concept of independent variable and statistical significance. In fact, there is not a lot to say about this concept indepent variables on its own. It is not even always true that the independent variable is controlled by the experimenter. I'm not sure if this can turn into a real article- maybe just a Wiktionary definition or merged into another stats related article. User:Ike9898 15:07, 21 Jan 2004 (UTC) :No offence taken – I was typing fast and didn't work out the point adequately. It's not really worth working it out correctly, since the point of the article is just to provide something for links in some (so far) non-technical articles, such as Meta-analysis. I definitely should have avoided the word ''manipulated'', although there are senses in which it is correct.
