Iso

==International Organization for Standardization== ISO is the short name of the International Organization for Standardization, a global federation of over a hundred national standards bodies with central secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland. This short name is derived from the Greek word meaning equal. It is not an acronym for the organization's name in any of its working languages, though it is conventionally written in all capitals. An ISO standard is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization. Although more than 15000 ISO standards have been published so far, each identified by a document number, the term ISO is in some fields commonly used just on its own as a shortname for something defined in one of these specifications. For example: *In photography the normal ISOs that are in increments of 1 EV: 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, etc... *In photography, the ISO number is the measure of ''film speed'' (sensitivity of photographic film to light exposure) defined in international standard ISO 5800. *In digital photography the sensitivity of the image sensor. each full step is equal to + or -1 Exposure_value. (i.e. if a meter indicates 12 EV you can shoot at f/5.6 and at 1/125 of a second at ISO 100, but you can stop down to f/4 and 1/125 or f/5.6 at 1/250 and use ISO 200. *In computing, an ISO file or ISO image (in context also just ISO, .iso or .ISO) is an ISO 9660 image, a bitstream that represents a CD-ROM file system as defined in international standard ISO 9660. ==Prefix== Iso- is a prefix indicating equality (mathematics) or similarity (derived from the Greek (language) word mentioned #In other languages). Many English (language) words, especially of a technical nature, contain the prefix. See the list of English words containing the prefix, iso-. An iso may refer to a contour line (derived from isopleth, isogram or isarithm, which are jargon terms for contour line derived from the fact that they connect points of ''equality''). Iso may also be used as an abbreviation for other list of English words containing the prefix, iso-. ==Acronym== ISO is also a three-letter acronym which can stand for: * the International Sugar Organization * in astronomy, the Infrared Space Observatory * in the British honours system, the Imperial Service Order * in the electrical generation and transmission industry, Independent System Operator * the Institute for Social Organization (a United States Jesuit think-tank founded in 1943 and closed in the early 1960s) * the International Organization for Standardization * the International Socialist Organization, a political organization active in the United States *`in search of' (usually iso or i.s.o.) in personal columns. ==In other languages== Iso means the following in other languages: *Big in Finnish language * a Latin (script) transliteration of the Greek (language) ίσος, meaning equal. ==Other Uses== Iso or ISO may also refer to: *Iso automobile, an Italy automobile manufacturer, who developed the Isetta bubble car and various sports cars *i.s.o., a gay-themed comic book (derived from the acronym for `in search of' and the greek for equal). *ISO may also refer to a class of sailing dinghy manufactured by topper. The [http://www.isoracing.org.uk/about_and_press/index.htm ISO] is a high performance two person, single trapeze GRP 4.74 m dinghy, featuring an asymmetric spinnaker of 21 sq. metres, and has terrific down wind performance. True or false: this article needs a dis-ambiguation message at the bottom. User:66.245.13.233 22:56, 30 Aug 2004 (UTC) ==Order of Sections== It is very confusing to have the first section as "other languages" as there is nothing presented so far. Imho the standards organsiation or prefix should be first, with the other languages following the prefix wherever that happens to be. User:Thryduulf 21:35, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC) ==ISO standards== I've removed the spelling Iso in reference to the International Organization for Standardization, simply because ISO's house style dictates that the name of the organization is always written in all uppercase letters. From my observations over the past two decades, this convention is ''very'' widely followed in practice. I therefore do not think that Wikipedia should include a misspelling. -- User:Markus Kuhn 11:49, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC) Since the term ISO is used both to refer to the standards body as well as to individual standards, some very brief introductory information about the organization seems useful and appropriate to me, even on the disambiguation page. -- User:Markus Kuhn 11:49, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC) ==This is just a disambiguation page== It seems overkill to add detailed information on "ISO" film speeds here, when there are dedicated articles on that subject (film speed, ISO 5800). Please make sure that there is only one single short bullet item for each ISO standard that is in colloquial language referred to as "ISO", which then refers to the article about that standard. In other words, only one bullet item for ISO 5800 film speeds! User:Markus Kuhn 12:59, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

sorry pls remove all of my talk == Main Page-discussion == I removed your edits to the main page talk-page. The main page talk-page is used for discussion regarding the main page ''and the main page only''. It is not a place to put essays, nor is it a place to ask for help with one. If you wish to contribute to wikipedia, you are most certainly welcome to do that, but place do it as high-quality contributions in the articles. However, wikipedia is not a place to publish essays, there is a strict policy called Wikipedia:No original research wich basically says that no "new" information can be put here. You are obviously a smart guy/girl, and high quality contributions are always appriciated though! If you have any questions about anything, please [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Gkhan&action=edit§ion=new drop me a line]. Oh, and one more thing, when saying something on a talk-page, add ~~~~ (ie four tildes) at the end. It adds your signature and a timestamp. User:Gkhan 22:29, Apr 17, 2005 (UTC)
