Hydrargyrum Medium-Arc Iodide#REDIRECT Hydrargyrum medium-arc iodide Hydrargyrum Medium-Arc Iodide#REDIRECT Talk:Hydrargyrum medium-arc iodide Hydrargyrum medium-arc iodideHydrargyrum Medium-Arc Iodide, frequently called just HMI is a Mercury (element)-halide discharge short arc lamp with a color temperature of approximately 5600K. The name is derived from ''Hydrargyrum'', an archaic term for mercury while ''Iodide'' indicates that iodine is the halogen used to form the active Chemical compound. ==History== In the late 1960s Germany television producers sought out lamp developer Osram to create a less expensive replacement for incandescent lights for the film industry. Osram developed and began producing HMI bulbs at their request. ==Today's use== Multi-Watt HMI lights are used in the film industry because of their optical spectrum, as well as their efficiency. The light they emit is close to that of noon sunlight. Using proper insulation techniques these lights can be used for underwater lighting. ==Efficiency== HMI bulbs are commonly two to four times as efficient in generating light than are their tungsten equivalents. ==See also== * Mercury-vapor lamp * High-intensity discharge lamp (HID) ==References== *[http://www.uvlamp.com/TechArt/shortarc.htm Short Arc/Compact Source Lamps] *[http://www.underwater.com.au/article.php/id/2085 Working with HMI lights] Lighting Video and movie technology Hydrargyrum medium-arc iodideThe "Films Using Them" section should be removed, as it gives the false impression that there is something rare or notable about films using HMIs. Almost every one of the dozens of movies I've worked on has used them. User:El Mariachi ==Etymology== I reverted out a change that someone made linking the "Hydrargyrum" in the keyword to mercury. If this was done to show the etymology of the name, we should probably just create an explicit "Etymology" section instead. User:Atlant 10:59, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC) :I don't think the etymology needs a whole section to itself, but since Hydrargyrum is a very uncommon term for mercury, it's more important to have a link for people who don't know what it means -- they wouldn't necessarily guess to follow the mercury link. Maybe a parenthetical? It looks a little clumsy. User:El Mariachi (cur) (last) 16:05, 19 Apr 2005 Atlant (How's this?) :Nice!
