As a scientist and an advisor to the Iraqi government, Shahristani was imprisoned in Abu Ghraib for ten years for objecting to Saddam Hussein's plans for a nuclear weapon. Shahristani was seen as a leading pick as the Iraqi prime minister for the provisional government; as a nonpolitical figure, he seems ideal for the position, as the Kurds, Sunnis, and Shiites have all expressed willingness to support him.
